Great Season for La Salle Basketball

The Freshman, led by alum Jamaal Smith, overcame key losses of going into the playoffs was still able to advance to the Freshman City Championship, looking to secure LaSalle’s first Frosh City Championship since 1965. A deep squad, the Freshman would finish tied for 1st place in the division going into the playoffs. Although the Freshmen would fall to Regis in the City Championship and endure a tough loss, it was an incredible season as the team finished 12-9 and this class leaves us with much hope for the future of the program.

The Junior Varsity team had a very good year, led by alum & year Coach Steven Cruz. Finishing the season off at 14-10 & third place in the division, the JV squad had a well-balanced roster that included 4 freshman and made a run to the city semi-finals.  Despite falling to Regis in the semi-finals, the JV showed great resolve, showing the hard work and dedication necessary to continue to grow and develop.

The Varsity team enjoyed a bounce back season improving on the previous year’s mark of 5-17 with a 15-10 overall mark under the guidance of 1st year Head Coach Jerome Pannell. Led by Seniors Brian Bass and Stephon Riley, the Varsity finished 3rd in the division, eventually falling to Salesian High School in the City semi-finals. The Varsity spent the vast majority of the season in 1st or 2nd place in the Division and began the process of establishing a new foundation for LaSalle Basketball. While the loss was disappointing, the Cardinals are poised for the future, returning 4 of the top 6 players.

La Salle at the Parade

La Salle Academy celebrated St. Patrick’s Day in a big way this year! Our alumni kicked off the festivities with a brunch hosted by alumnus Martin J. Cottingham ’88 at the office of Avison Young on Sixth Avenue. Alumni from almost every decade were at the brunch to reunite and reminisce as their excitement built for the big march on Fifth Avenue. The brunch was followed by the St. Patrick’s Day Parade. Nearly all the members of our student body convened with alumni on 46th Street to proudly represent La Salle on St. Patrick’s Day. New York City heard us—we are La Salle!!
