Cardinal Baseball Results!

Varsity Cardinals vs. Moore Catholic

La Salle’s Varsity Baseball season has just about begun! The Varsity Cardinals played a tough scrimmage last week against Moore Catholic, losing 11-0. Moore Catholic is a top school for baseball and plays in a different division, but this was a great challenge for the Cardinals to prepare for their division. This will only help the Varsity Cardinals play stronger in their own division.

JV Cards Soar Over Cristo Rey

Brooklyn, NY – The La Salle JV Cardinals (1-3) picked up their first win of the season with a 13-2 victory over non-conference independent Cristo Rey at the American Legion Field.  The JV Cards jumped out with a five run first highlighted by RBI singles from Roberto Liz, Christian Cueto and Franklin Olivares.  In fact the entire top half of the Birds line was stellar going a combined 9 for 14, with 8 runs scored and 7 RBIs.  The pitching took advantage of the offensive good fortune and overpowered Cristo Rey behind the arms of Nicholas Rivera (W, 1-0 – 3 inns, 1H, 2BB, 5K), Cristobal Rivera and Nicholas Brito.  Nicholas Rivera also took home the first Angry Bird of the season, standout player of the game, for his efforts on the mound and at the plate (2 for 3, 1R, 1RBI).

Not In The Cards

Brooklyn, NY – In a battle of the birds, the La Salle JV Cardinals took it on the chin from the Cardinal Hayes Cardinals (CHSAA – AA) falling 3-15 at American Legion fields.  The JV Cards fall to 1-4 with just game left before league play begins the week of April 11th.  After giving up three in the top of the first the La Salle rallied to score two of their own and make it close at 2-3 going into the top of the second but that is where the wheels started to come off.  Hayes took command scoring 3-5-1-3 over the next four innings on a combination of hits and La Salle miscues in the field.  Those extra outs cost La Salle pitchers as they just weren’t able to have shorter innings, sans Cristobal Rivera who pitched a 1-2-3 sixth inning on 10 pitches.  Carlos Flores (L, 0-2 – 3 Inns, 11H, 11R, 9ER, 4BB, 4K) took the loss.   On offense, Nicholas Rivera led the way with 2 hits.

Next Game: Thursday, March 31st at 12:00pm JV Cardinals vs. Fordham Prep at 2701 Bruner Avenue, Bronx.

La Salle at Rube Goldberg Robotics Competition!

As a result of our year-long work with Cooper Union, our boys came in 2nd place at the Rube Goldberg Robotics Competition on Sunday at the Fieldston School in Riverdale. Our team – a combined effort with St. Joseph’s HS for Girls (another collaborative in motion) – created a kinetic machine of sorts that was titled “War and Peace” which framed the connection between the duality of push / pull to that of pushes of war and the return to peace …

This was our first competition of this sort and we – literally – almost made it to the national competition. Great thanks go to the LaSalle Academy science department, Cooper Union Engineering Dean George Delagrammatikas who worked on this project with our boys all year, and especially the LaSalle students who did the work.

We also got a special award for a two-school collaboration (with St. Joe’s) which the judges created on the spot and thought was particularly “science-worthy.”

La Salle Basketball is Back!

La Salle Academy has one of the richest athletic histories of all the Catholic schools in New York City. After a 20-year skid, the school’s sports program is back and in a big way. Both the freshmen and JV basketball teams captured the CHSAA B City Championships. The varsity team lost in the semi-finals, but was able to win the B Division Regular Season with one of the better records (16-6) in the last 10 years.

Freshman City Champions 2016 (20)Starting off the last week in February strong, the JV played a hard fought game to win the City Championship over Regis 55-47. This is La Salle’s first JV City Championship since 1999. Then the freshmen pulled away with another City Championship title for La Salle over Regis 46-44. Varsity had a wonderful season as well, winning the B Division Regular Season and finishing with a 16-6 record, one of the best records in the last 10 years!

JV City Champions 2016 (23)Congratulations to all the Cardinal Basketball Teams, especially Freshmen Coach Jamaal Smith, JV Coach Elvis Peralta, and Varsity Coach Jerome Pannell. Congratulations are also in order for Athletic Director, Raymond Polanco, for leading La Salle Academy’s athletic department to many victories. What a way to end the basketball season this year!

JV Basketball Wins the Championship!

La Salle’s JV Basketball Team captured the CHSAA B City Championship with a 55-47 victory over Regis at Fordham Prep in the Bronx. A hard fought and competitive game throughout, La Salle jumped out to an early lead and entered the 4th quarter with a 10 point lead. Regis made a run to cut the lead to 5 but the Cardinals pulled together to secure the win and LaSalle’s first JV City Championship since 1999.

The Cardinals were led by Nathanial Kramer & Khalil Harris with 11 points while Chad Vickers & Giovanni Hernandez each added 10 points.

A phenomenal job by Coaches Peralta & Dault in leading this group from the #3 seed to Champions!
