LSA For the Win, JV Cardinals 2016 CHSAA A Division JV Baseball Champions

jv championships 2

Brooklyn, NY, May 20, 2016 – The La Salle Academy JV Cardinals successfully defended their 2015 title with a 5-3 victory over Nazareth to win the 2016 CHSAA A Division JV Baseball Championship at American Legion Fields.   It was a typical game in the early part, with LSA and Nazareth going back and forth with the scoring. The Cards jumped up 1-0 in the top of the first only to see Nazareth score two in the bottom of the first, then add one more in the second.  But unlike the previous three meetings this year (all loses by the Cardinals), LSA did not kick the game away with errors and let the Kingsmen back in, holding them off the boards for the final five innings.   A day after Carlos Flores pitched a No-Hitter in the semi-final game, three LSA pitchers combined on a two hitter.  Franklin Olivares picked up the win going four innings of 1 hit ball with three runs, one earned run, five strikeouts and seven walks.  The captain, Nicholas Brito, got the final two outs with the tying run on base to pick up his second save of the season.  However, the pitching star of the day was Matthew Camacho, who came on in relief of Olivares in the bottom of the fifth to avenge the early ghosts of games against Nazareth past.  His two and a third innings (1 hit, 5Ks, 1BB) were a crucial hold against a team that had beat him twice this year.  For his heroics (he also had an RBI), he was awarded the Championship Angry Bird.

jv championships 1

Offense sells tickets; La Salle racked up 11 hits. Brito, Nicholas Rivera, Jordan Garcia and Roberto Liz lead the way with two hits each. But defense wins championships; and on this championship day LSA committed only two errors compared to the 21 in the three previous Nazareth games.  On the day the Angry Bird Movie hits the theatre (coincidence of fate), La Salle won only its second JV title in the schools 100 plus years.  It’s the first City Championship under Head Coach, Chris Washington.  Coach Alex Cordero, who won last year’s title, is now the Head Varsity Baseball coach at La Salle.  With the victory La Salle JV finishes the season above .500 at 9-8 (5-4, 2nd Place in the division – 2-0 in the playoffs) plus a CITY CHAMPIONSHIP.

Flores’ No-No Propels JV Cardinals Into Championship Game

May 19, 2016, Brooklyn, NY – It wasn’t a perfect game but it wasn’t far from it as Carlos Flores pitched a no-hitter to propel the La Salle Academy JV Cardinals to a 12-0 knockout (5 innings) win over St. John’s Prep and a spot in the CHSAA A Division Championship Game at American Legion Field.  Flores was stellar posting nine strikeouts against only three walks and had three 1-2-3 innings out of five.  His pitching was supported by an LSA offense that jumped out of the gate in the first inning batting around and scoring six runs.  Jimmy Muniz and Jordan Garcia each went 3 for 3 to pace the JV birds. Christain Cueto added three RBIs and two runs.  But the day and the Angry Bird belonged to Carlos Flores (W, 5 Inns – No Hits, No Runs, 9 K, 3 BB, HB).

Next Up for La Salle JV it’s the CHSAA A Division JV Championship Game against Nazareth (1 seed) TODAY, Friday, May 20th at American Legion Field, 10200 Seaview Ave, Brooklyn, NY.  First Pitch is 4pm.

LSA Closes Out the Handball Season

On Tuesday, La Salle took away two wins after St. Raymond’s had to forfeit a doubleheader due to their coach on medical leave. LaSalle was scheduled to play St. Raymond away. Both JV and Varsity handball teams finished the regular season at 4-10. La Salle awaits the final standing to see if they make it to the playoffs.

It will be quite the game as St. John’s Prep is the 3rd seed, while La Salle is in 2nd. The winner will play Nazareth (1 seed) on Friday for the CHSAA A Division JV Championship.

Cardinals Clinch 2nd Place Over SJP

Queens, NY, May 12, 2016 – The La Salle Academy JV Cardinals clinched 2nd place (CHSAA – A Division) with a 11-9 victory over St. John’s Prep at Elmjack Little League.  With the win, LSA swept the season series (3-0) and finished 5-4 in the division and earned home-field in the A division JV semi-final playoff game on Thursday, May 18 against St. John’s who is locked in as the third seed.

As for the game putting up 11 runs isn’t easy but Jimmy Muniz lead the way with three hits.  In fact, the top six of the JV Birds lineup went a combined 10 for 25 with 8 of the 11 runs scored.  The offense was in support of Franklin Olivares who picked up the win going four innings – 4 hits, 6 runs, 4 earned, 5Ks and 7BBs.  Nicholas Brito went the final three innings and although he made it interesting, three runs on three hits, he picked up the save for the game AND a winning season.

The Angry Bird was given to Franklin Olivares for his work on the mound (W, 4Inn, 4H, 6R, 4ER, 7BB, 5K)  He also went 1 for 3 at the plate with a run scored.

Next Game: Thursday, May 19th, CHSAA A Division JV Semi-Final.  St. John’s Prep (3) vs. La Salle Academy (2). Location and Time (TBA)

Cardinals Lay a Turkey Against Nazareth

Brooklyn, NY, May 10, 2016 – In what could only be described as a letdown after Saturday’s thrilling victory over Scanlan, the La Salle Academy JV Cardinals were a complete no-show for their game against Nazareth losing 0-8 to the Kingsmen at American Legion Fields.

The loss clinched first place (CHSAA – A Division) for Nazareth while putting LSA (4-4) in danger of dropping to the number three seed for the upcoming playoffs.

Matthew Camacho took the loss despite giving up only four hits.  Again, against Nazareth, the Cardinals’ errors and walks proved to be the difference.  In the three games against the Kingsmen, La Salle has committed a total of 21 errors.

The lone bright spot on offense was Nicholas Brito who went 2 for 4 at the plate.

This Week’s Handball Results

On Tuesday, May 10th, La Salle played against St. Francis Prep at home and lost the game.  However, freshmen Ian Lucero/Jancarlos Flores won their double match at the JV level.  It was their first individual victory this season.  Derek and Jason Criollo continued to impress with a hard-fought battle on the Varsity double match.  The score was 21-18 as they are just a few points away with a victory.

Thursday, May 12, 2016-La Salle came up in the short end in their game against McClancy.  However, freshmen pair Ian Lucero/Jancarlos Flores won their double match yet again.  This gives them 2 wins in the last 2 games.  Overall, the entire freshmen group improved drastically since the beginning of the season.  With no experience to handball prior to last month, the improvement is stunning.

Next game is at home against St. Edmund Monday, May 16th.

LSA Varsity Baseball on a 5-Game Winning Streak!

Monday, May 9, 2016- Varsity baseball defeated St. John’s Prep 9-6 in an away game at Elm Jack Field. John Michael Silver pitched a great game with 8 strike outs. Julian Nieves went 3-3 and Wilfredo Cueto had a big hit to drive two runs.

Tuesday, May 10, 2016- Varsity baseball played a doubleheader against Bishop Loughlin at American Legion Field. La Salle came away with two wins! Danny Maria pitched a beautiful first game with 8 strike outs bringing him to 5-0 in pitching. Gilbert Santos Jr. pitched the second game to add up the runs with a triple.

Wednesday, May 11, 2016- La Salle Cardinals defeated Sacred Heart 12-6 in baseball at American Legion Field. Julian Neives pitched another beautiful game with 8 strike outs. The victory was a total team effort, as everyone hit the ball.

The Cardinals are 9-4 and are on a 5-game winning streak as of Wednesday’s game.

Stellar Weekend for LSA Baseball!

This weekend, both La Salle JV and Varsity baseball teams swept the field when they played Scanlan. JV defeated Scanlan 19-15. Nick Brito brought the team home with a winning hit, pitched a great game, and played a 3-5 game.

Varsity crushed Scanlan 7-1 on Saturday. Chris Pimental pitched a beautiful game with 13 strike outs. He also was 2-4 and 2 RBI.

It was a glorious weekend for the Cardinals!

Father Patrick Desbois Visits La Salle Academy

IMG_0034

Father Desbois spoke to the entire student body and the student body of The Heschel School yesterday at La Salle. Father Desbois, a French Catholic Priest, is the author of The Holocaust By Bullets and the head of Commissions for Relations with Judaism at the Vatican.
He told us first hand of his life’s work of uncovering close to 2 million Holocaust Victims from Eastern Europe, the Ukraine and Russia. He connected the dots for us on the tragedies of the Holocaust and the genocide/ mass murders in Iraq, Iran, Mexico and through the efforts of ISIS. “Never again”, he told us, but “never again” is happening now, Father said. He also implored our boys to “find what God’s voice says” to each of them and follow it, like he has tried to do with his work. Today, I listened in the hallways as our kids talked about his stories and his chat with them. Wonderful stuff.

Father’s visit was his first to an American High School, and also marked the launching of our school-to-school partnership with The Abraham Joshua Heschel School. Father mentioned quietly to me that he would like to come back each year and “do something” at La Salle, as he was taken by our boys and our mission.  Special guest speakers and “teachable moments” like the one yesterday with Father Desbois are what is increasingly setting LaSalle apart from any other high school in NYC – Catholic, private or public. Our action-based learning core allows for history – literally – to jump off the page and into our boys’ hearts.

The boys presented Father with a collection of 350 notes from every student, thanking him for his work. Special thanks go to the religion department and Ann Straub for putting these books together, as well as to Vice President Ismini Scouras and Mary Anne Glassen for putting this top drawer event together.
