Yesterday, La Salle hosted it’s annual La Salle Works Reception. La Salle Works, the img_0005school’s intensive internship program, offers students paid and unpaid internships to prepare for and in the world of work. Students gain real-world experience and begin to think about their future careers.

During the dinner, many representatives from different agencies all over New York City presented the opportunities for img_0018work they offer at their sites. La Salle offers over 100 internship sites to choose from. Students have the opportunity to work with real estate agencies, technology companies, city council, law firms and much more.

Among the many speakers was Mr. Bernard img_0112McElhone, La Salle Academy Board of Trustee Consultant and major supporter of the school. Mr. McElhone started the La Salle Works program three years ago, recognizing the need and the great potential in the young men at La Salle. While McElhone did not graduate from La Salle, he is a proud member of this community. He encouraged the young men to work hard and to represent La Salle well. La Salle thanks Mr. McElhone for all of his support and for beginning this invaluable program.

What a Weekend for La Salle!

La Salle’s cardinal red was spotted all over the city this weekend. Beginning the weekend blessing-of-the-stands-3early on Thursday, September 15th, the student council led the procession for the “Blessing of the Stands” before marching in the San Genaro Parade on Saturday on Mulberry Street in Little Italy. Administration and our student body, marched past the zeppoles and sausage and peppers, and paid homage to St. Joseph!

Also on Saturday, further uptown on Randall’s Island, La Salle Academy participated with its partner, the Special Olympics, at their Fall Sports Championships. Dozens of our students helped the athletes in various sporting endeavors, and were blessed for the opportunity.img_0037

The next day, our La Salle boys marched in African American Parade in Harlem with the New York State Chapter of the NAACP. Principal Kerry Conroy and our boys marched down the famous Adam Clayton Blvd and celebrated yet another important narrative in our NYC tapestry.african-american-day-parade

On Sunday, Catholic New York, our Archdiocesan weekly newspaper, led with a gorgeous picture of La Salle’s boys and Brother Anwar Martinez—our Religion Chair and faculty member– on the cover of their annual Back to School Section! The article highlighted La Salle’s surge in applicants and the rise of the school!

La Salle offers many action-based learning and service opportunities. These are just a few that kicked off the school year. La Salle young men represented in many places over the weekend and will continue to do so throughout the year.

La Salle’s Tablet Program: Round 2

Wednesday, September 7, 2016: La Salle Academy entered into the second year of its tablet program with one of the biggest La Salle classes the school has seen in years, the Class of 2020. Thanks to La Salle’s robust partnership with Microsoft, 105 freshmen received Microsoft Surface Tablets to enhance their academic experience for four years. These young men were all smiles as they unveiled their tablets and spent the day training up on how to use the tablets to their advantage.

The sophomores also received their tablets this morning after leaving the devices in the safety of La Salle for the summer. The sophomores received a training as well to refresh their technology skills and knowledge of best practices.

Both the freshmen and sophomores will participate in a tablet-based curriculum which enables students to learn digital literacy, navigate social media and share content with the world. The first year of the tablet program was so wildly successful that the school’s tablet program made it into the New York Times! Students were seen getting competitive in the classroom while taking quizzes on their tablets which are linked to the SMART Boards in the classrooms. This is just one sign of the increased student engagement that these devices promote.

La Salle is leading edge. With a world that has become increasingly digital, the use of technology in schools has become increasingly relevant and necessary. There is a rather large trend of digital learning and La Salle is at the forefront.

New Administration at La Salle Takes the School to New Heights

This September, La Salle goes into high gear. And with a stellar Administration as the driving force. There are many brand new faces as the leadership of La Salle this year and they come to their positions and to La Salle with much expertise and practical knowledge of how best to serve the young men of La Salle, and what it means to be Lasallian.

At the top of this list as La Salle’s Vice President of Academic/Student Affairs and Principal is Ms. Kerry Conroy, a woman that is Lasallian through and through. Beginning as a Lasallian Volunteer and serving as the campus minister,Kerry Conroy tutor, and freshmen religion teacher, Ms. Conroy returned to La Salle shortly after her years of service to serve the Lasallian young men once again as a guidance counselor. Soon after that, Ms. Conroy was promoted to Director of Guidance and most recently served as La Salle’s Assistant Principal for Academic Affairs. Committed to Catholic education in the Lasallian tradition, Ms. Conroy was named Principal of La Salle Academy in June 2016.

DP HeadshotMr. Daniel Perez comes to La Salle with over ten years of experience in Private, Catholic, non-profit schools that serve predominantly underserved families. He brings administrative and collaborative leadership skills to the team and shares the goal and vision of La Salle Academy: to provide opportunities that allow them to reach their true potential. Before coming to La Salle, Mr. Perez served as Principal of St. Aloysius School after serving as Principal of Nativity Mission Center, both New York City elementary schools that serve a similar population to that of La Salle Academy. As a Latino educator who was born and raised in the Lower East Side (blocks away from La Salle), Mr. Perez is well-prepared to serve La Salle’s students and families. His commitment to service is only enhanced by his position as President of the Nativity Mission Center Alumni Association. La Salle is blessed to welcome Mr. Perez to the Lasallian family as the new Assistant Principal for Academic Affairs.

Jerome PannellIn 2008, Mr. Jerome Pannell was hired to lead the JV Basketball Program. He was quickly promoted to Assistant Varsity Coach a year later and has served as a substitute in multiple roles within the school. He served as Dean of Students from October 2011 to January 2012 and has been Varsity Head Coach since June of 2014. During Coach Pennell’s time at La Salle, he has also been the Director of Staffing at Two Dots Productions where he has was the centerpiece for all staffing operations, serving as the gatekeeper to all staff bookings. He has nearly 10 years of experience with on-site event management including activations at the US Open Tennis, BCS National Championship, the PGA Championship and others. Coach Pannell has several years of experience as a religion teacher and youth director at a Catholic grade school in Harlem, where he was born and raised. He wears many hats at La Salle this academic year including the Director of Campus Ministry, Athletic Director, and Associate Dean.

Rounding out this stellar administrative team is a veteran Lasallian and Assistant
Principal for Student Affairs,
Mr. Raymond Polanco. A La Salle Academy Alumnus of the class of 1989, Mr. Polanco has an unmatched 0023passion for La Salle and the success of each student, serving at La Salle Academy for over 20 years. Born and raised in New York City, Mr. Polanco shares many of the experiences of our students. He brings extensive education experience as well as a vast amount of institutional knowledge to the administrative team.

La Salle Academy is in the hands of some of the best high school administrators the school has ever seen. La Salle is in its third year of its “comeback” story, and these men and women are prepared to lead the school to great heights beginning this academic year. La Salle is grateful for this cohesive administrative team.
