Guidance Department Receives Big Honor Among Catholic School Counselors

La Salle Academy is proud to announce an honor bestowed upon two members of the school’s faculty.

Ms. Sandra Sanchez, Guidance Counselor, and Ms. Rosalie Cernaro, College Advisor – both members of La Salle’s Guidance Department – have been named as President and Vice President, respectfully, of the New York City Catholic Secondary School Counselors Association for the 2018-19 academic year. This elite organization is

“… a group of caring professionals who are committed to promoting the intellectual, social, emotional and spiritual development of adolescents within the Catholic tradition. We continually seek to share and exchange ideas through regular meetings and professional development opportunities that will enhance our productivity and effectiveness as counselors.” – New York City Catholic Secondary Counselors Association Mission Statement

This is an extraordinary honor for these two dedicated Lasallians, both of whom have called La Salle home for the last few years.

“They are both part of the new vanguard of highly recruited and elite educators at La Salle who dedicate themselves to the caring and covering of the ‘whole life of the child’ at our La Salle. Sandra and Rosalie couldn’t be more center-stage to our Lasallian successes.” -Dr. Catherine Guerrieo, President of La Salle Academy

In addition to teaching Psychology as an elective, Ms. Cernaro is the College Counselor at La Salle Academy. In the last three years, she quadrupled the amount of college financial aid and scholarships given each year to our seniors and in 2018, she guided our students to reach a 100% college acceptance rate.

Ms. Sanchez – who started her career in education and service as a Lasallian Volunteer a decade ago – has become a true leader within our La Salle Academy community and a centrifugal force of our recent successes at La Salle. Ms. Sanchez accepted this position, saying

“We will be bringing school counselors together from across the five boroughs of NYC on important topics that affect school counselors in the city, specifically in Catholic education. This is an honor for both of us!  And we are also keeping it Lasallian! We look forward to serving and helping our fellow school counselors across the city and most of all representing La Salle Academy!”

La Salle Academy congratulates both Ms. Sanchez and Ms. Cernaro for this incredible honor and the extraordinary work they continue to do on behalf of the young men of La Salle Academy.

La Salle on the Town!

Thursday, September 20, 2018, Manhattan, NY – La Salle Academy students, administration and faculty were in full force this past weekend as they marched in two city-wide cultural parades.

On Saturday, a group of La Salle students led the way in The 92nd Annual Feast of the San Gennaro Parade, which celebrated the spirit and faith of Italian-American culture in historic Little Italy in Lower Manhattan. La Salle students were even selected to lead the “blessing of the stands” last week in preparation for The Feast.

La Salle continued the weekend festivities on Sunday at The 49th Annual African American Parade, which celebrated African-American culture, heritage and legacy. The La Salle young men proudly marched the streets of Harlem, led by the La Salle Academy band.

La Salle Academy has a long-standing relationship with these two historical community organizations. Both events brought these students together as a brotherhood and promoted the values of community service and cultural and social awareness.

To learn more about student life at La Salle, please attend Open House on Saturday, October 27, 2018, from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. The La Salle Academy Open House is a wonderful opportunity to discover La Salle’s new and existing scholastic and extracurricular programs, meet current students and faculty, and learn about the brotherhood the students and alumni share at this 171-year old institution. Cardinal Soccer Falls at Saint Edmund

Friday, September 14, Gerritsen Beach Park, Brooklyn– The La Salle Cardinals soccer team got off to another slow start and fell behind 0-2 at the 10-minute mark of the 1st half before eventually losing 6-4 to St. Edmund Prep in a CHSAA divisional game at All American Field in Brooklyn. The loss drops La Salle to 0-2 to begin the 2018 campaign.

St. Edmund got on the board quickly after two LSA defensive lapses that created the scoring opportunities, one on a breakaway and the other on a direct kick, both of which found the back of the net. La Salle senior striker, Ernesto Castelan, single-handedly brought the Cardinals back to life, scoring all four Cardinal goals of the game. Unfortunately, the team needed some more help to get La Salle into the win column.

La Salle Soccer is back in action on Tuesday against Cristo Rey Brooklyn.  Kickoff is scheduled for 4pm at Linden Park in Brooklyn.

La Salle Visits Spain with Abroad Program

Fresh off the airplane with some expected jet lag after a whirlwind European adventure, La Salle Academy’s native Spanish class just returned from their inaugural La Salle Abroad excursion to Spain!

La Salle Academy spent eight days traveling around Madrid, Barcelona, Zaragoza, Toledo and beyond, and received three college credits and the experience of a lifetime as a result. This trip is the first of many for La Salle Abroad in the queue, including Italy in April 2019, England in July 2019 and more to follow in 2020.

On Monday, July 23rd, this group of 12 eager young men, along with myself and Mr. Robert Torres, Chair of our Spanish Department, as chaperones, departed from JFK for Spain. We saw all the sights in Barcelona (Parque Guell, la Sagrada Familia, Montserrat, Gothic City Quarter) and Madrid (Royal Palace, Gran Via, Calle Mayor, Puerta del Sol, Prado), took day trips to Toledo and the Mediterranean Sea, and of course, made sure we tasted authentic Spanish food and saw a real-life Flamenco show! (The boys even took individual Flamenco dance lessons, so ask them to show you a few moves next time you see them at one of our events.) Below are some photos of the students and Mr. Torres in all their glory.

We could not have done this without Mr. Torres, a decades-long veteran faculty member and Chair of our Language Department at La Salle Academy. Mr. Torres organized this very special La Salle Abroad trip to Spain. His vision began four years ago via his incessant (and successful!) whispering in my ear. His vision was reflected in the joy seen in our students’ eyes this past week.

The picture below shows the boys at the beach in Costa Azul, Sitges, in the Mediterranean. The boys literally RAN to the beach and into the water. Enjoying the beautiful weather and sunshine in Spain, we lunched seaside on cherries, watermelon and mangoes from some local vendors.

Cost for the day? Less than 10 euros for cherries and train tickets. Value to the boys? PRICELESS.

CHIRP Plus Takes Learning Outside

CHIRP (Cardinal High Intensity Readiness Program) Plus students had another fun-filled educational experience this summer, exploring New York City and completing projects in the classroom. CHIRP Plus includes honors incoming freshmen students to prepare for the high school experience at La Salle Academy. This year, Ms. Masulo took the group to Central Park, Ripley’s Believe It Or Not and the Museum of Natural History. They also spent time in the classroom building marble roller coasters out of paper and scale drawing using Britto work.

Varsity Baseball Holds Off Elimination

Saturday, May 26, 2018 – The La Salle Cardinals scored five unearned runs in the top of the first then held on for a 5-2 victory over Christ The King to hold off elimination at Juniper Valley Park in Queens. The Cardinals move into the Quarter-Final elimination game on Monday against St. Edmund Prep.

Gilbert Santos, Jr. led off the game with a sharp grounder up the middle that skipped passed Christ The King’s shortstop and into center field and was quickly advanced to second after CTK misplayed Nicholas Brito’s bunt.  La Salle scored their first run after CTK’s shortstops low throw on Julian Nieves’ grounder pulled the first baseman off the bag and following a walk, the Cardinals found themselves with bases loaded and no outs.  This time, however, La Salle cashed in as catcher, Ethan Rosario, laced a three-run triple to center field putting the Cards 4-0.  Rosario later scored on an RBI ground out for the fifth and final run.

The first inning run production made a winner out of LSA’s starter, Julian Nieves, who pitched a complete game scattering four hits with 8 strikeouts and 4 walks.

JV Baseball Falls to Scanlan in Playoffs

Thursday, May 24, 2018 – It was the end of an era as the 3-time defending CHSAA JV City Champions, La Salle Cardinals, lost 12-0 (five innings) to Scanlan in the 2018 Semi-Finals at Scanlan High School in the Bronx.  A fourth straight title was not in the cards as the rematch of last year’s Championship game was a total role reversal, this time, with La Salle on the short end of the stick.

The Cardinals only managed to get three runners into scoring position but could not push one across as they were no-hit by Scanlan’s starting pitcher.

It was a rebuilding season for La Salle JV and although it didn’t produce a championship, there were major strides shown.

Varsity Baseball Stumbles at Msgr. Scanlan

Monday, May 21, 2018 – Playing with the lead for most of the game the La Salle Cardinals gave up four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and lost 5-4 to Monsignor Scanlan in the 2nd Round of the 2018 CHSAA Varsity ‘A’ Baseball Playoffs at Msgr. Scanlan High School in the Bronx.

The loss drops the Cardinals into the losers bracket of the double elimination tournament as they await an elimination game on Wednesday, May 24th.

Cardinals Advance to 2nd Round of Playoffs

Friday, May 18, 2018 – In a rematch of last year’s Championship, the La Salle Cardinals began the playoffs with a come-from-behind, 9-4 victory over Nazareth on Randall’s Island, to move into the double elimination round of the 2018 CHSAA Varsity ‘A’ Division Baseball Playoffs.

Two errors in the top of the first opened the door for Nazareth as they jumped ahead 3-0 before La Salle could even come to the plate but the Cardinals chipped away plating solo runs in the 1st and 2nd innings to cut the deficit to one going into the bottom of the third. In the fourth, La Salle took advantage of a Nazareth miscue, an infield pop-up that would have been the third out, fell to the dirt, and the Cards cashed in, scoring four on a two-run triple by Franklin Olivares and RBI singles by Jimmy Muniz and Gilbert Santos, Jr. The bottom of La Salle’s order was phenomenal going 9 for 11 with seven runs scored and six RBIs.

The offensive explosion made a winner out of starting pitcher, Julian Nieves who went 6 1/3 giving up 8 hits, 4R, 2ER with 8Ks and only 3BBs. Cristobal Rivera got the final two outs to eliminate Nazareth and push La Salle into Round 2.

NEXT UP:It’s the Double Elimination round of the CHSAA Playoffs as La Salle travels to the Bronx to face the #4 seen, Scanlan on Monday, May 21st, first pitch is 4:30pm.

Salvatore LaRocca ‘82, Chairman of La Salle’s Board of Trustees, served as emcee for the evening as well as Co-Chair of the event alongside fellow La Salle alumnus Vincent S. Tese ’60, Executive Chairman, Florida Community Bank. LaRocca said, “The hard work and tireless efforts of Dr. Guerriero and her team are incredible. Cardinals fall to St. Edmund’s on the Road…

Tuesday, April 24, 2018 – La Salle Academy varsity baseball dropped their first division game, 4-3, to St. Edmund Prep at Bergen Beach Field in Brooklyn.  The road loss moves the Cardinals’ record to 6-5 overall and 5-1 in the CHSAA ‘A’ division.

All the action came in the first two innings as Prep opened the scoring with three runs in the bottom of the first.  La Salle, rallied back in the top of the second with three runs of their own to tie the game, however St. Edmund pushed across one more with a two-out base hit, which turned out to be the difference.

It was nip and tuck the rest of the way as both teams had chances to put up more runs but stellar relief work by La Salle’s Franklin Olivares and St. Edmund kept both teams off the board the rest of the way.

Carlos Flores took the loss for La Salle and Nicholas Brito had two hits for the Cardinals.

Victories for LSA Baseball!

LSA JV Baseball Win Big in Late Innings
Thursday, April 19, 2018 –The La Salle Academy JV Cardinals used two big innings to break open a close game for a 17-5 victory over St. John’s Prep on a chilly day at Elmjack Little League in Queens.

The Cardinals batted around in the fifth and sixth innings plating five and seven runs respectively, which put the game out of reach and secured a victory for Angel Espinal in relief of Elijah Bridgett. On offense, La Salle’s 3-4-5 hitters (Espinal-Eddy Caba-Bridgett) went a combined 6 for 14 with eight RBIs.

Varsity Baseball Victorious in Early Season “Home & Home” vs. St. John’s Prep
Wednesday, April 11, 2018 – Queens, NY – Playing on back to back days the La Salle Academy varsity baseball earned a league victory with a 20-3 four inning knockout of St. John’s Prep at Elmjack Little League.

The Cardinals got off to another slow start, failing to score, in the top of the first, but made up for it in a big way batting around three times in two innings (twice in the fourth inning) and putting up a 14 spot in the fourth.

Julian Nieves, got the win striking out seven over three innings of 2-hit ball. The offense was paced by Nicholas Brito (3 for 3, 2B, 2 RBI), Ethan Rosario & Jimmy Muniz, who each had two hits.

Friday, April 13, 2018 – The La Salle varsity baseball team finished off a perfect week of CHSAA ‘A’ division play with a convincing 17-0, five inning win over St. John’s Prep on Randall’s Island.

The victory improves the Cardinals overall record to 3-4 as they remind undefeated in the division. Franklin Olivares got the start and picked up the win.

Varsity Baseball Grinds Out Victory over Loughlin
Wednesday, April 18, 2018, Brooklyn, NY – It was a grind, but in the end the La Salle varsity baseball team came away with a 9-6 victory over Bishop Loughlin at American Legion Fields, to improve to 4-0 in the CHSAA ‘A’ division. Senior, Julian Nieves, went five strong innings to pick up his second victory in as many starts as junior, Franklin Olivares, picked up the save with two solid innings of his own.

The Cardinals jumped ahead 2-0 in the first inning thanks to an opposite field base hit and sacrifice fly by Adrian Santos and Franklin Padilla, respectively. However, the Lions roared back to take a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the inning, thanks to four errors by the Cardinals defense. The errors were a theme for La Salle as they committed a total of 10 for the game. Fittingly, it was La Salle capitalizing on a Loughlin error in the top of the fifth inning to grab the lead and that fueled the victory for the Cardinals.

With the score tied at three, two outs and a man on third, Nicholas Brito (2 for 4) hit a soft pop up on the third base line that was bobbled then dropped by Loughlin opening the flood gates to a five-run inning for La Salle.

No Hitter Sparks Cardinals to 5th Straight Victory
Friday, April 20, 2018 – The La Salle Cardinals made it five straight CHSAA wins with a 10-0 6-inning knockout of Sacred Heart on a chilly day on Randall’s Island. The victory improves La Salle’s record to 6-4 overall and 5-0 in the division.

The Cardinals jumped out to 7-0 lead after two innings on a combination of small ball, Sacred Heart miscues and opposite field base hits by Adrian Santos (1 for 4; 1 RBI) and Cristobal Rivera (2 for 3; Sac Bunt). The Irish only managed to get things going in the top of fifth, but with the bases loaded, Olivares got a lazy flyball to center to end the threat.

NEXT UP:La Salle travels to Bergen Beach in Brooklyn to face St. Edmund Prep on Tuesday, April 24th, first pitch is 4:30pm.

Cardinals Baseball Earns a Split at Coastal Virginia Spring Break Baseball Classic

Monday, April 9, 2018 – In an attempt to avoid the bad weather scheduled for the greater Norfolk area, the Cardinals would be scheduled to play their final two games of the Spring Break Classic on Tuesday night in an unconventionally timed double-header.

Fork in the Road
A tight game got out of control late as the La Salle Cardinals lost 10-4 against King’s Fork High School on Day 2 of the Coastal Virginia Spring Break Baseball Classic. After falling behind 0-3 after one inning, La Salle twice got within one run but could not get over the hump.

The Cardinals outhit King’s Fork 6-5 but just couldn’t get the timely hit and paid the price as King’s Fork put up five runs in the bottom of the sixth to put the game away.
Nicholas Brito paced the Cardinals offense with three hits and Franklin Olivares took the loss, giving up 5 runs(3 earned) over five innings.

Better Late

In a game that didn’t start until 10:30pm, the La Salle Cardinals finally picked up their FIRST WIN of the season with a 9-4 win over Euclid (OH) at 1:30am the next morning. The late night start that didn’t stop Cardinals pitcher Julian Nieves, who picked up the win. La Salle was down 3-2 going into the bottom of the fourth when they finally got the big hit as Adrian Santos laced a two-out base clearing triple to the gap in left center to claim a 5-3 lead.

Euclid(OH) fought back loading the bases with no outs in the sixth inning. Cristobal Rivera, pitching in relief of Nieves, struck out three straight to end the threat. Rivera, also helped himself out at the plate in the bottom of the frame with a RBI triple of his own. Euclid put up three runs in the top of the seventh but in the end just ran out steam in the wee hours of the morning.

A tremendous trip throughout, the team was able to play three games against a high level of competition, complete a service project at a local food bank, take a college tour of Norfolk State University and even found some time to get some bowling in. All in all, a wonderful experience for our young men.

Cardinal Baseball Heads to Virginia

Monday, April 2, 2018 – Travelling in a cardinal red coach bus, the La Salle baseball team headed to Virginia this Spring Break to play in the 2018 Coastal Virginia Spring Break Baseball Classic. They spent the next morning training before their first game of the tournament against Norfolk Christian.

In a well-played first game of the 2018 Coastal Virginia Spring Break Baseball Classic, the La Salle Cardinals fell by the score of 4-1 to the host team, Norfolk Christian, at Lakewood Park in Norfolk, Virginia. Junior lefty, Carlos Flores took the loss but was stellar for La Salle, tossing a complete game on only 67 pitches.

The Cardinals got a lead off hit by Gilbert Santos, Jr. on the first pitch of the game but were unable to capitalize as the threat ended before it started. In the bottom of the frame Norfolk Christian capitalized by taking advantage of a fielding error to plate two runs (one earned) for a 2-0 lead.

La Salle had multiple opportunities to put runs on the board but couldn’t cross the plate until Franklin Padilla’s (1 for 3) RBI ground out following Adrian Santos’ (1 for 2) one out triple in the top of the sixth.

Between practice and games, the Cardinals have managed to sprinkle in some team bonding, dining at Crackel Barrell and bowling together along the way. Check out the photos below!

Playing against rival Regis in a low scoring contest, the Cardinals led 34-30, entering the 4th quarter and tried to withstand a late run by the Raiders that included 4 three-pointers but were unable to regain the lead, falling 44-42.

The Cardinals were led by Korey Williams, who with his short jumper in the 2nd quarter surpassed 1000 points for his career, and finished with 18 points on the day while Josiah Chandler added 14 points, 7 assists and 7 rebounds.

While the close loss was tough on the Cardinals, it does not take away from what was an incredible season! This season saw the team net its second consecutive 20-win campaign, finishing 21-3 overall. The Cardinals, who began the season ranked #1 in Class B by the NYS Sportswriters Association, also concluded the regular season with that #1 ranking.

The Cardinals also had 3 individuals honored by CHSAA as Korey Williams was voted League MVP, Josiah Chandler was selected to the “All-League” team and Jerome Pannell was selected as Division B Coach of the Year.

We are all very proud of our team, we celebrate their efforts and accomplishments as we begin to prepare for next season but not before wishing our seniors the best of luck in college and beyond!

Special Video: In Memory of Br. Thomas Scanlan, F.S.C.

Dear La Salle Academy Family  – alumni, friends and beyond,

La Salle Academy is mourning the passing this week of our beloved family member, friend, mentor, guidepost and educator extraordinaire, Brother Thomas J. Scanlan, FSC. Brother Tom was President Emeritus of Manhattan College, but his leadership has left an indelible imprint on our La Salle as well. For new members of our community who may not have met or known our Brother Tom, he was also a long-time member of La Salle Academy’s Board of Trustees and only retired from our board six months ago. In many ways, he was a singular instrument for our school’s survival in difficult times. He guided La Salle Academy through extraordinarily challenging times for many years alongside his friend and former Board Chair Valentine Lehr ‘58. Brother Tom is also responsible for tapping our present Board Chair Salvatore LaRocca ‘82 as our next Board Chairman, leaving a continued legacy of love and leadership long after he would be gone. Brother Tom led with surgical precision and a wisdom that had few peers. His mark has been made deeply on our school, and he will be remembered with an abiding love and a fond recall of his wry and knowing smile.

Board Chair LaRocca commented: “Brother Tom was a devoted member of the La Salle family. His contributions and guidance went far beyond his time of service on our Board. He was a friend and role model to all of us that knew him. He will be greatly missed by our community.”

Added former Board Chair Lehr: “Greatness requires a smart person in the right place at the right time. Tom fit that description.”

Pictured: Brother Thomas Scanlan, F.S.C. (third from left) with fellow members of La Salle Academy Board of Trustees and administrative leadership.

As President for the last four years at La Salle, I have heard so many of you talk in hushed, emotional tones about various Brothers who taught you and changed your lives in profound ways when you were boys. I often wondered to myself what kind of men could impact a thirteen-year-old boy so much that he still gets emotional talking about him sixty or seventy years later. But then, I began to know Brother Tom. I am new to the Lasallian ethos, but everything I care to know or understand about the Christian Brothers as an Order, as a mission-based group of Christ-centered servants, and as teachers, I believe is found in the life’s work of Brother Tom. He was the very best of them, and La Salle Academy will always remain grateful for his time with us.

The first time I met Brother Tom was as part of my initial interview for the President’s job at La Salle. He was Chairing the Search Committee. After I gave a particularly verbose and (shockingly) emotional and intense answer to one of his questions, he pushed his Chair back, focused his gaze for a split second to the ceiling (a classic Tom move), smiled cagily and said to me: “You’re something else, aren’t you?”

No, Brother Tom, you are. Something else. Something else, completely. Your likeness, I suspect, will never come this way again. We will miss you.

Dr. Catherine Guerriero
President, La Salle Academy

METTA WORLD PEACE VISITS HIGH SCHOOL ALMA MATER

La Salle’s Varsity Cardinals receive lessons in life and basketball from former NBA star

East Village, N.Y., January 19, 2018 – Metta World Peace, formerly known as Ron Artest, visited his high school alma mater, La Salle Academy, in New York City this past Friday. He joined La Salle’s championship varsity basketball team for a pre-game photo-op and halftime pep talk.

With the Cardinals up by four points over rival Sacred Heart at halftime, World Peace was impressed by the La Salle boys’ drive on the court and even complimented junior point-guard Josiah Chandler. In the locker room, World Peace and the team discussed the state of the game and he told them to keep working hard and playing hard.

He also stressed the importance of becoming a well-rounded young man because the NBA may not be in the cards for everyone. He used his good friend and fellow La Salle alum as an example, sharing, “…he was on the freshman team and stopped playing to focus on academics. He got a scholarship to Temple [University] and now is doing big things.” Before the start of the second half, he left the team with this: “Focus on the game, but make sure you focus on your career, too. Put everything in the game but think about everything you want to do…”

Ron Artest graduated from La Salle Academy in 1997 and went on to play college basketball at St. John’s University until he was drafted by the Chicago Bulls in 1999. World Peace is best known as one of the NBA’s premier defenders. In 2004, he won the NBA Defensive Player of the Year Award and was named an NBA All-Star and earned All-NBA honors. He also helped the Los Angeles Lakers win the NBA Championship in 2010.

La Salle Students Enjoy a Special Christmas Assembly

Thursday, December 21, 2017 – On the last day before a much-anticipated Christmas break, La Salle students celebrated Mass together and enjoyed an assembly with entertainment by visitors as well as a few of their classmates. If the La Salle community was not in the Christmas spirit before, they are now.

Opening the assembly were the Backtrack Vocals, a New-York-City-based Acapella group who began their fame on YouTube. They captivated the student body with Christmas songs such as “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen.”

Click here for a clip of one of their performances:  https://www.facebook.com/LaSalleAcademy.NYC/videos/1837816412903296/

Next up was a returning visitor to La Salle Academy, Camrus Johnson. Camrus is a jack-of-all-trades. An actor, singer, and writer based in New York City, Camrus brought his original style to the students of La Salle on Thursday morning. He started off with his interpretation of “T’was the Night Before Christmas.”

Before Camrus returned to the stage, four La Salle Academy students performed original poems about the Christmas season. Each spoke about different perspectives during the holiday season.

Returning to the stage after insightful performances by La Salle students, Camrus Johnson performed his rendition of “The Twelve Days of Christmas,” engaging the students with a sing-along and adding the word, “Swag” after the line, “Five Golden Rings.”

The final performance came from the La Salle Academy Band and Chorus. La Salle would like to thank all the performers who made the last morning before Christmas vacation an especially spirited day.

Christian Brother Provincial Visits La Salle Academy

Monday, November 20, 2017 – Brother Dennis Lee, the Provincial of the Brothers of the Christian School District of Eastern North America (DENA), was generous enough to spend the entire day at La Salle on Monday, November 20th.  Brother Dennis met with our senior leadership, addressed our student body in full assembly and stayed quite late for the Board of Trustees’ Meeting.

During the Assembly, a few La Salle Academy students presented on what they are thankful for this year. Following the student presentations, Brother Dennis educated our students about the Lasallian association. Our students were “all ears” as the Provincial spoke about the importance of coming together in unity with one another despite the differences we may have.

Brother Dennis’ show of faith in this school and it’s dynamic trajectory at the present was made quite clear by his decision to spend the day at La Salle a mere two months into his new leadership term, which is quite a statement indeed. La Salle is grateful for his leadership, and his love of our boys and our very own La Salle Academy mission.

La Salle Soccer: Shut out & Knocked out of the Playoffs

Wednesday, November 1, 2017, Brooklyn, NY – The La Salle Cardinals took a tough loss as they were shut out and knocked out of the 2017 CHSAA Soccer playoffs by virtue of a tough 2-0 loss to the South division’s #1 seed, Cathedral Prep at Aviator Sports Complex.  La Salle’s ends with a final record of 6-8-1 on the year.

The Cardinals had trouble building an offense all game and unfortunately, the shots they got just missed the mark.

We would like to thank this year’s soccer seniors for the commitment and dedication to La Salle Academy and the Cardinals Soccer program!

La Salle Bowling: 6-0

On Friday, November 3rd the JV and Varsity Bowling teams defeated The Mary Louis Academy. The win marks a perfect 6-0 start for both teams.

Jimmy Falcon and Isiah Perez were top scorers for the JV, each garnering a 168 game followed by Justin Williams with a 160 game.

The lead score for the varsity was a 230 high game while Joseph Palaguachi bowled a 215 game and Michael Anorve a 212 game.

Both teams return to action on Tuesday, November 7th when they take on Cathedral Prep.

Cardinal Dolan Celebrates Mass at La Salle Academy

CARDINAL DOLAN CELEBRATES ALL SAINTS DAY MASS,

BLESSES CHAPEL AT LA SALLE ACADEMY

East Village, N.Y., November 1, 2017 – La Salle Academy welcomed His Eminence, Timothy Cardinal Dolan, Archbishop of New York, to its Sixth Street campus this morning to celebrate Mass for All Saints Day. La Salle’s gymnasium was transformed into a chapel for a crowd of 450 attendees, including students, faculty, staff, alumni, benefactors and the Superintendent of Schools for the Archdiocese, Dr. Timothy McNiff.

“I thank La Salle Academy for the magnificent example of a splendid Catholic education that is going on here,” Cardinal Dolan said, acknowledging the congregation during his homily. Cardinal Dolan mentioned that Dr. McNiff shares his admiration for the school.

“You have done a great job here, and it really gives us all hope that things can go well, that great schools like this can continue to succeed. It takes a lot of determination and hope to do what you have done here and turn it all around,” said Cardinal Dolan. “The path was – and is – not easy. It takes a lot of trust and faith to get through things. La Salle is flourishing now with a hopeful future. You got it right.”

Following the Mass, Cardinal Dolan blessed the new school Chapel that has been incorporated into La Salle’s third floor expansion, visited with alumni and students at a lovely breakfast reception and took a tour of the school. “Wonderful,” “gritty,” and “hardworking” were just a few of the words Cardinal Dolan used to describe the community at La Salle.

La Salle Soccer Rolls into 2nd Round of Playoffs with Win over Bishop Loughlin

Monday, October 30, 2017, Queens, NY – It took overtime for La Salle Academy to earn the victory,  a minute into the extra session, defeating Bishop Loughlin, 2-1 at Juniper Valley Park in the first round of the 2017 CHSAA “B” Soccer Playoffs.  The Cardinals (North #4 seed) survived and move into Wednesday’s quarter-final game against Cathedral Prep (South #1 seed).

Ernesto Castelan, saved the day in OT taking a crossing pass from Ricardo Rosas and burying his shot top shelf, dead center for the winner.  That goal, his second of the game and 16th of the season, rescued what had been, up until that point, an inconsistent performance by La Salle against the South #5 seed.   The first half played without any emotion ended 0-0 without either team being able to sustain any real scoring chances.

In the second half, playing into the wind, Castelan scored his first goal off long ball that he was able to trickle past Loughlin’s goalkeeper into the net.  However, the Lions, roared back with a penalty kick that was just hard enough of LSA’s keeper Garcia for the equalizer.

Next Match:  Wednesday, November 1st.  CHSAA “B” Soccer Playoffs Quarter-Final against Cathedral Prep.  The match is set for a 6:00pm kickoff at Aviator Field in Brooklyn.

La Salle Soccer: Cardinals Fall Short to Sacred Heart in Season Finale

Wednesday, October 25, 2017, Yonkers, NY – In their final tune-up before the playoffs, the La Salle Cardinals came out flat in the second half and suffered a 5-2 loss to Sacred Heart at Fleming Park in Yonkers.  With the loss, the Cardinals finished the regular season at 5-7-1, in fourth place in the CHSAA “B” Division North, and will host a 1st round playoff game on Monday, October 30th.

John Heras scored his fourth goal of the season and Ernesto Castelan contributed his team leading 14th goal of the season but it wasn’t enough to overcome an effective Sacred Heart offense.

Next Match:  The 2017 CHSAA “B” Soccer Playoffs begin on Monday, October 30th. La Salle will host the #5 seed from the South Division, the Bishop Loughlin Lions.  The match is set for a 3:00pm kickoff at Field #44 on Randall’s Island.

Bowling Roars to Dual 5-0 Start!

Herbie Isaac led all scores for JV with a 187 high game and was followed by Jimmy Falcon, who bowled a 183 game.

Chandler Hayer led all scores for the Varsity with a 264 high game and a 629 three game series while his teammate came in second with a 248 game and a 620 3 game series.

Other scores:

Joseph Palaguachi       215

Michael Anorve           208

Both teams return to action for a special Friday match-up on November 3rd vs. Mary Louis HS.

La Salle takes over NYC over the Weekend!

This weekend La Salle Academy was out in full force throughout New York City.

On Saturday, October 21st, we welcomed 650 prospective students, parents, grandparents, and siblings to our campus on 215 E 6th Street for our annual Open House. Potential future Cardinals in 6th, 7th, and 8th grade and their families began lining up at our doors at 9:40 am, twenty minutes before our scheduled start time of 10:00 am, to visit La Salle. Attendees had the opportunity to explore the school – now three full floors of classroom space! – meet current students, parents and alumni, and even speak with the full faculty and staff on board at La Salle about what our 170-year institution will provide for their sons that other schools won’t be able to and why it truly is the next best step in their boys’ academic careers. A special thank you to the Parents Association and alumni for volunteering their time for this major recruitment event!

Saturday night, La Salle attended the Michael T. Carroll Yorkville 9/11 Memorial Dinner Dance at Our Lady of Good Counsel Church in memory of alumnus Michael Carroll from La Salle’s class of 1980. This fundraiser – with close to 300 attendees –  is done each year in honor of Michael Carroll, FDNY, LaSalle Class of 1980, who was killed that fateful day on 9/11 at the World Trade Center. Two of our students who receive the scholarships in his name attended to thank the guests for their continued support and scholarship money they provide to the young men at La Salle. The pictures below are of all the LaSalle alumni who come back to support the event every year and remember their friend.

And the appearances didn’t stop!

Bright and early on Sunday morning, four of La Salle’s Campus Ministry students along with Campus Minister Terence McCorry, Music Director Jon Abrams and the Development Team traveled to Our Lady of Angels Chapel at St. Anthony’s High School in South Huntington for the 2nd Annual William F. DeSpagna ’46 Memorial Mass to remember deceased alumni, family and friends of La Salle. About 40 guests, inclusive of alumni and their families and friends of La Salle attended the Mass and breakfast reception that followed.

We wound down the weekend with a trip to Staten Island to attend St. Peter Secondary School’s Centennial Dinner on Sunday night. St. Peter’s is one of Lasallian partner schools, and we came to provide support to “the family” out in Staten Island. Eight students sauntered around cocktail hour, meeting every Brother Brother Dennis Lee, both Auxiliary Provincials (Brother Thomas Casey and Brother Rich Galvin), Brothers on our Board like Brother Francis (below) and of course, His Eminence Timothy Cardinal Dolan, who will be visiting La Salle in a little over a week to celebrate Mass for All Saint’s Day.

One student said to His Eminence, “We need more space at La Salle… will you help us?” to which he responded, “I will try my hardest. You guys are hard to say no to.”

There is no rest for the weary here at La Salle Academy. More space at 6th Street means more boys entering La Salle in the fall which means more need for scholarships. We are La Salle and we never stop.

La Salle Soccer Shuts Out St. Raymond’s 3-0

Monday, October 16, 2017, Bronx, NY – After a scoreless first half, the La Salle Cardinals soccer team tallied three goals after the intermission for a 3-0 victory over the St. Raymond Ravens at AFC Rapids Field to improve their record to 5-4-1.

La Salle goal keeper, Emanuel Garcia, kept the Cardinals in the game during a tense first half with a tremendous diving save on a penalty kick off the foot of Raven’s. Garcia also had a beautiful kick save off a PK rebound late in the second half to preserve his fourth win and second shutout of the year.

Freshman, Valon Dudus got La Salle on the board in the 48th minute with his third goal of the season.  Ernesto Castelan notched his team leading 11th goal in the 52nd minute and senior winger, Christian Toledano completed the scoring with his third goal, a laser shot to the right corner from 17 yards.

Next Game:  The push for the playoffs gets another stern test on Wednesday as La Salle hosts CHSAA B Division leaders and undefeated All Hallows on the pitch in Central Park – North Meadow Field #5.
Kickoff is set for 4:00pm.

Principal Kerry Conroy Receives the Bassen Service Award

After nearly two decades of service at La Salle Academy, Principal/Vice President Conroy has been awarded the Bassen Service Award on Saturday, September 30th during a ceremony at La Salle University. A busload of faculty, staff and students traveled to Philadelphia to support Ms. Conroy.

Beginning as a Lasallian Volunteer and serving as the campus minister, tutor, and freshmen religion teacher, Ms. Conroy returned to La Salle Academy shortly after her years of service to serve the Lasallian young men once again as a guidance counselor. Soon after that, Ms. Conroy was promoted to Director of Guidance and most recently served as La Salle Academy’s Assistant Principal for Academic Affairs. Committed to Catholic education in the Lasallian tradition, Ms. Conroy was named Principal of La Salle Academy in June 2016 and was given the additional title of Academic/Student Affairs in February 2017 .

The Bassen Service Award was named in honor of Brother Christopher Bassen, FSC (1942-2006). This award recognizes an alumnus of the Lasallian Volunteers who has continued a life of service since their volunteer year(s). Brother Chris lived and breathed De La Salle’s mission of service to the poor. Chris nourished and made real his dream of the Lasallian Educational Opportunities (L.E.O.) Center in Oakland, CA. L.E.O. continues to provide educational opportunity to “at-risk” youth and adults who may otherwise not receive the assistance, guidance and resources they need. The recipient of this award is an alumnus of the Lasallian Volunteer program who has incorporated the value of Lasallian service to the poor into the fabric of his/her life.

Congratulations, Ms. Conroy!
