La Salle Academy’s July Recap

Dear Friends of La Salle Academy,

Preparing to move our offices from the Annex to their new quarters in the building at 215 E 6th Street where our classrooms are located was a group effort and settling in to the new space is an ongoing collaborative task. The precautions associated with the pandemic necessitated our staff to be on site according to a staggered schedule. This exacerbated the challenge of working together but ultimately we successfully accomplished the job. Bringing everyone together under one roof will be a clear and daily reminder that our association is for a united purpose, namely, to live out the mission of our school.
Another benefit of the sale of the Annex, of course, is the generous decision by the Brothers to present an annual infusion of income to La Salle Academy from the revenue generated by the funds received from the purchase of the property. Since our published tuition of $11,000 is almost half of the actual cost of instruction, this ongoing gift will assist in covering the subsidy each student receives. Sincere thanks to the Brothers for this financial commitment, which contributes towards ensuring the future of La Salle Academy.

Effective July 15th, La Salle Academy’s administrative staff now call the school’s campus at 215 E 6th Street home. The “Annex” building that housed their offices as well as the Brothers’ Community has been sold. The Christian Brothers still own the old school building on East 2nd Street that is now leased by Nord Anglia International School. Click here to read more about the move and the sale.

Since our June 4th Graduation Reunion was held via Zoom, we have been hosting virtual happy hours on the platform for our graduating classes ending in “0” and “5.” This has been a great way to connect with a wide range of La Salle alumni from throughout the decades. If you are interested in gathering with your classmates virtually, please contact Daria Coney at 212-475-8940 ext. 301 or [email protected].

Members of the Class of 2024 have tuned in to three virtual sessions of Get Ready… Get Set… so far this summer to learn about various aspects of high school and La Salle Academy. The incoming freshmen have the opportunity to ask questions and meet each other virtually during these sessions.

We have made the decision to continue remote learning at La Salle into the fall for the first quarter of the 2020-2021 academic year. Click here to read more about the decision from Principal, Ms. Kerry Conroy. The healthy and safety of our students, faculty and staff is of utmost importance to us. We will reassess this decision as we progress into the year.

As we adjust to so much that is new in our world, our city, and our school building, we look forward to our future, which, as we have been reminded, is marked by uncertainty. We go forward in faith.

One final activity of our 2019-2020 school year has to occur, however. That is the graduation ceremony for our Class of 2020. I am an eagerly anticipating our commencement exercises at St. Patrick’s Cathedral on August 13th. This will be a private event with proper protocols in place. Nevertheless, it will be a unique opportunity to celebrate a very special group of young men. Congratulations and blessings to our newest alumni!
