La Salle Academy’s January Recap

Testing. If there was a contest for Word of the Month at La Salle in January, it would be “testing!”

Of course, semester exams always are part of the first month of the year. For most of our freshmen, comprehensive tests in each subject are a new experience. For the seniors who are gearing up for college, this is one of the final ways we are preparing them for the challenges ahead.

Testing for signs of COVID-19 and the virus’ testing of us were prevalent motifs in January, too. Each Wednesday all adults and students are tested with a nasal or cheek swab. Those who are classified as positive are required to stay home and participate in classes remotely. Both patience and creativity are tested as teachers and students shift to that modality.

La Salle’s Green Team, under the direction of Mr. John Neering, has been hard at work harvesting produce in our hydroponics towers for a new collaboration with neighborhood restaurant Cooper’s Craft + Kitchen. Cooper’s head chef will use some of our locally-sourced produce in their menu selections. Green Team members made the first delivery of cilantro to the restaurant in January.

Our Class of 2026 is shaping up to be a good one! Mr. Anthony Chin has been conducting private tours and admissions exams in person for prospective students. Admissions exams are held monthly and tours are held by appointment only. If you know of a young man looking for an individualized high school experience this fall, encourage him to contact Mr. Chin at 212-475-8940 ext. 240 or [email protected].

I am en route to Florida at the end of February to visit with alumni and friends who reside in the Sunshine State. We will host a reception at Jack Dusty in Sarasota on Saturday, February 26th and a reception at Cooper’s Hawk Winery & Restaurant in Palm Beach Gardens on Thursday March 3rd. More information about the events and how to RSVP is available on our website.

We recently hosted five men from the Class of 1952 whose work with new technology testified that our alumni have learned how to learn! When I mentioned to Aaron, a senior, that we had this event, he was astounded to realize that meant his comparable reunion would occur in 2092! We continue to host Virtual Alumni Reunions. View the schedule of upcoming reunions on our website.

Stay tuned, as registration for our Annual Cardinal Classic Golf Outing and 30th Annual Scholarship Benefit will be live soon. Our golf outing will be held on Monday, May 16th at North Hempstead Country Club in Port Washington. Our Scholarship Benefit will be held on Thursday, June 9th at Tribeca Rooftop in Manhattan. Contact Ms. Daria Coney at 212-475-8940 ext. 301 or [email protected] for more details.

As we move into the second half of our school year, I reiterate my gratitude for your affirmation of our mission and encourage to you to be on the lookout for more good news from La Salle in the months ahead.

May God bless you and those special to you!
