JV Baseball Sees Error of Ways in Loss

La Salle Sees Error of Ways in Loss

Brooklyn, NY, April 21, 2016 – For the second time in as many games ,the La Salle JV Cardinals baseball team gave away outs against a good team that puts the ball in play and loses 7-17 to Nazareth despite outhitting the Kingsmen 10-6 at American Legion Fields.  The loss drops LSA’s record to 3-5 (1-2 CHSAA – A Division).

In the two game series against Nazareth, the Cardinals committed 15 errors.  The 10 on Thursday were easily a season high and undercut a brilliant pitching performance by LSA started Carlos Flores (4 2/3 inn – 4H, 7R, 4 Earned, 5BB, 2K), who was unable to get out of the fifth inning due to the extra workload.

For the second straight game, Matthew Camacho took the loss in relief despite only giving up one earned run in an innings worth of work.

On offense Nicholas Brito (3 for 3 – 2R, SB) help the Cards jumped out to a 2-0 lead thanks to a pair of RBI singles from Jimmy Muniz and Christain Cueto (2 for 3 – 2B, RBI, K) but were denied a third as Muniz was gunned at the plate to end the inning.  But as has been the case in these games with the Kingsmen, they roared right back with three runs of their own in the bottom of the first to go one up.

The game really got out of hand in the fifth inning as LSA raced back to the lead scoring four including two on Camacho’s two RBI pinch hit triple to right but Naz countered five of their own in the bottom of the frame and then eight in the sixth to seal the defeat.

Next Game: Tuesday, April 26th vs St. John’s Prep at American Legion Field, 4pm

JV Cardinals Downed by Nazareth 5-7

Brooklyn, NY, April 19, 2016The La Salle JV Cardinals absorbed a tough 5-7 loss to CHSAA – A Division leaders Nazareth at American Legion Fields.

Nicholas Rivera got the start for the Cards and went four innings of one run ball and left with a 3-1 lead.  That’s when things started to unravel for La Salle as Nazareth batted around in the top of the fifth inning off of Matthew Camacho, who came on in relief of Rivera.

After a fly out to start the inning the next sixth Nazareth batters reached base, which included a base clearing 3-run double down the line in right to Naz’ cleanup hitter, Alex.  In all six runs crossed the plate for Nazareth before the final out was recorded.

LSA tried to rally with single runs in the sixth and seventh, but in the end just couldn’t get enough done at the plate or in the field as we were undone with five errors.  The JV Cardinals actually got of to a quick start in the bottom of the first, via a 2-RBI single from Jimmy Muniz.

The La Salle offense was lead by Jordan Garcia, who went 3 for 3, 2 runs and 4 stolen bases.  Nicholas Brito also had two hits and two runs scored.

Next Game: Thursday, April 21st at Nazareth – 4pm – American Legion Fields

Most Improved Handball Team!

On Friday, the handball team played a doubleheader against Molloy and the result was unfavorable in both games.  However, a few freshmen have shown significant improvement since the beginning of the season.  The 7 freshmen who joined the team all have no prior experience in handball, yet they have shown much potential in only one week!

The season continues today with an away game at McClancy High School (68th St & 31st Ave Park).

In Play in the CHSAA

The La Salle JV Cardinals opened up CHSAA league play yesterday with a sounding 9-2 victory over Monsignor Scanlan. The win evens La Salle’s overall record at 3-3 (1-0 in the division).

After giving up 2 earned runs in the bottom of the first inning, LSA’s Franklin Olivares settled and shut down Scanlan over the next 3 innings before giving way to Cristobal Rivera in the bottom of the fifth, who picked up the save the old-school way, with 3 scoreless innings and even struck out the last batter with the bases loaded to end the game.

The JV Cardinals were lead on offense by Nicholas Rivera, Jimmy Muniz and Christian Cueto who each had two hits. It was a very good all around game, and for the first time all year, LSA did not commit an error.

LSA entered the top of the sixth in a tight 4-2 game, but erupted and batted around plating five runs in the process on two hits and five walks.

On a day when it seemed everyone came up big, the Angry Bird was given to our shortest player, Cristobal Rivera, for outstanding player of the game (See photo below).

Tough Loss Against Nazareth

These angry birds are on a mission! The next game is against Cathedral High School at American Legion Field at 4:00pm. Come out and see what these birds are capable of!

PACKED FOR LEAGUE PLAY

Jimmy MunizBrooklyn, NY, April 6, 2016 – In our final tune up before CHSAA league play begins, the La Salle JV Cardinals came home with a solid 10-7 victory over Packer Collegiate at the American Legion Fields.  The JV Cards second win of the season was a back and forth affair with multiple lead changes and pitchers on both sides working their way out of jams all game.  This even matchup came down to some pass balls by the Packer catcher and some key defensive plays by the Birds including a 3-6-5 double play and a nicely executed pick off play (which we just worked on in practice on Monday) to end threats.  La Salle jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first but Pelican pitching held the fort to prevent any further damage, similar to what Cards starting pitcher Carlos Flores did in the top of the inning after surrendering a leadoff double.  We added runs in each of the last four innings but Packer keep the heat on and drawing within one in the top of the sixth.  The Cardinals were resilient playing small ball in the fifth (Single, Sac Bunt and an RBI groundout from Franklin Olivares, Brian Sanchez and Cristobal Rivera, respectively) and held firm to push across the insurance runs needed to seal the win in the bottom of the sixth. Franklin Olivares picked up the win and Nicolas Rivera was stellar getting the save.  On offense, Nicholas Brito picked up two hits but the Angry Bird was given to Jimmy Muniz (3 for 3, 3 Runs, 1 Walk, 2RBI, 3 SB) as outstanding player of the game.

CHSAA League Play begins with our  Next Game: Tuesday, April 12th vs Scanlan – 4pm at American Legion Fields

Cardinal Baseball Results!

Varsity Cardinals vs. Moore Catholic

La Salle’s Varsity Baseball season has just about begun! The Varsity Cardinals played a tough scrimmage last week against Moore Catholic, losing 11-0. Moore Catholic is a top school for baseball and plays in a different division, but this was a great challenge for the Cardinals to prepare for their division. This will only help the Varsity Cardinals play stronger in their own division.

JV Cards Soar Over Cristo Rey

Brooklyn, NY – The La Salle JV Cardinals (1-3) picked up their first win of the season with a 13-2 victory over non-conference independent Cristo Rey at the American Legion Field.  The JV Cards jumped out with a five run first highlighted by RBI singles from Roberto Liz, Christian Cueto and Franklin Olivares.  In fact the entire top half of the Birds line was stellar going a combined 9 for 14, with 8 runs scored and 7 RBIs.  The pitching took advantage of the offensive good fortune and overpowered Cristo Rey behind the arms of Nicholas Rivera (W, 1-0 – 3 inns, 1H, 2BB, 5K), Cristobal Rivera and Nicholas Brito.  Nicholas Rivera also took home the first Angry Bird of the season, standout player of the game, for his efforts on the mound and at the plate (2 for 3, 1R, 1RBI).

Not In The Cards

Brooklyn, NY – In a battle of the birds, the La Salle JV Cardinals took it on the chin from the Cardinal Hayes Cardinals (CHSAA – AA) falling 3-15 at American Legion fields.  The JV Cards fall to 1-4 with just game left before league play begins the week of April 11th.  After giving up three in the top of the first the La Salle rallied to score two of their own and make it close at 2-3 going into the top of the second but that is where the wheels started to come off.  Hayes took command scoring 3-5-1-3 over the next four innings on a combination of hits and La Salle miscues in the field.  Those extra outs cost La Salle pitchers as they just weren’t able to have shorter innings, sans Cristobal Rivera who pitched a 1-2-3 sixth inning on 10 pitches.  Carlos Flores (L, 0-2 – 3 Inns, 11H, 11R, 9ER, 4BB, 4K) took the loss.   On offense, Nicholas Rivera led the way with 2 hits.

Next Game: Thursday, March 31st at 12:00pm JV Cardinals vs. Fordham Prep at 2701 Bruner Avenue, Bronx.
