Varsity Basketball Comes Up Short in the CHSAA Semi-Finals

Middle Village, NY, March 3, 2020 – Playing in the CHSAA Semi-finals at Christ the King on Tuesday night, the varsity Cardinals lost a hard fought 55-52 game at the hands of the St. Edmund Prep Eagles. LSA Soccer Falls to St. Raymond’s in CHSAA Quarterfinals

CARDINALS ELIMINATED FROM PLAYOFFS

Thursday, November 1, 2018, Bronx, NY– After playing to a tight 0-0 draw through the first 40 minutes, the La Salle Cardinals gave up 3 second half goals and were eliminated from the 2018 CHSAA B Division Soccer Playoffs, 3-1 at the hands of the St. Raymond Ravens at AFC Rapids Field in the Bronx.

Frustrated for the entire first half, St. Raymond got on the board first, off a direct kick just outside the 18-yard box to the left that was tucked in to the back corner. They added a second goal before La Salle’s freshman, Aaron Parajon, knocked in a goalie misplay for his first of the season to cut the deficit in half at 2-1. However, the Ravens added a goal off a scramble in front of the net to ice the game at 3-1.

The end of the season closes out the La Salle careers for 12 seniors, including Striker, Ernesto Castelan, who finished with a team high 27 goals and a nomination to the Mayor’s Cup (PSAL vs CHSAA) match.

Cardinal Soccer Falls at Saint Edmund

Friday, September 14, Gerritsen Beach Park, Brooklyn– The La Salle Cardinals soccer team got off to another slow start and fell behind 0-2 at the 10-minute mark of the 1st half before eventually losing 6-4 to St. Edmund Prep in a CHSAA divisional game at All American Field in Brooklyn. The loss drops La Salle to 0-2 to begin the 2018 campaign.

St. Edmund got on the board quickly after two LSA defensive lapses that created the scoring opportunities, one on a breakaway and the other on a direct kick, both of which found the back of the net. La Salle senior striker, Ernesto Castelan, single-handedly brought the Cardinals back to life, scoring all four Cardinal goals of the game. Unfortunately, the team needed some more help to get La Salle into the win column.

La Salle Soccer is back in action on Tuesday against Cristo Rey Brooklyn.  Kickoff is scheduled for 4pm at Linden Park in Brooklyn.

Saturday, May 26, 2018 – The La Salle Cardinals scored five unearned runs in the top of the first then held on for a 5-2 victory over Christ The King to hold off elimination at Juniper Valley Park in Queens. The Cardinals move into the Quarter-Final elimination game on Monday against St. Edmund Prep.

Gilbert Santos, Jr. led off the game with a sharp grounder up the middle that skipped passed Christ The King’s shortstop and into center field and was quickly advanced to second after CTK misplayed Nicholas Brito’s bunt.  La Salle scored their first run after CTK’s shortstops low throw on Julian Nieves’ grounder pulled the first baseman off the bag and following a walk, the Cardinals found themselves with bases loaded and no outs.  This time, however, La Salle cashed in as catcher, Ethan Rosario, laced a three-run triple to center field putting the Cards 4-0.  Rosario later scored on an RBI ground out for the fifth and final run.

The first inning run production made a winner out of LSA’s starter, Julian Nieves, who pitched a complete game scattering four hits with 8 strikeouts and 4 walks.

JV Baseball Falls to Scanlan in Playoffs

Thursday, May 24, 2018 – It was the end of an era as the 3-time defending CHSAA JV City Champions, La Salle Cardinals, lost 12-0 (five innings) to Scanlan in the 2018 Semi-Finals at Scanlan High School in the Bronx.  A fourth straight title was not in the cards as the rematch of last year’s Championship game was a total role reversal, this time, with La Salle on the short end of the stick.

The Cardinals only managed to get three runners into scoring position but could not push one across as they were no-hit by Scanlan’s starting pitcher.

It was a rebuilding season for La Salle JV and although it didn’t produce a championship, there were major strides shown.

Varsity Baseball Stumbles at Msgr. Scanlan

Monday, May 21, 2018 – Playing with the lead for most of the game the La Salle Cardinals gave up four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and lost 5-4 to Monsignor Scanlan in the 2nd Round of the 2018 CHSAA Varsity ‘A’ Baseball Playoffs at Msgr. Scanlan High School in the Bronx.

Two errors in the top of the first opened the door for Nazareth as they jumped ahead 3-0 before La Salle could even come to the plate but the Cardinals chipped away plating solo runs in the 1st and 2nd innings to cut the deficit to one going into the bottom of the third. In the fourth, La Salle took advantage of a Nazareth miscue, an infield pop-up that would have been the third out, fell to the dirt, and the Cards cashed in, scoring four on a two-run triple by Franklin Olivares and RBI singles by Jimmy Muniz and Gilbert Santos, Jr. The bottom of La Salle’s order was phenomenal going 9 for 11 with seven runs scored and six RBIs.

The offensive explosion made a winner out of starting pitcher, Julian Nieves who went 6 1/3 giving up 8 hits, 4R, 2ER with 8Ks and only 3BBs. Cristobal Rivera got the final two outs to eliminate Nazareth and push La Salle into Round 2.

NEXT UP:It’s the Double Elimination round of the CHSAA Playoffs as La Salle travels to the Bronx to face the #4 seen, Scanlan on Monday, May 21st, first pitch is 4:30pm.

Cardinals fall to St. Edmund’s on the Road…

Tuesday, April 24, 2018 – La Salle Academy varsity baseball dropped their first division game, 4-3, to St. Edmund Prep at Bergen Beach Field in Brooklyn.  The road loss moves the Cardinals’ record to 6-5 overall and 5-1 in the CHSAA ‘A’ division.

All the action came in the first two innings as Prep opened the scoring with three runs in the bottom of the first.  La Salle, rallied back in the top of the second with three runs of their own to tie the game, however St. Edmund pushed across one more with a two-out base hit, which turned out to be the difference.

It was nip and tuck the rest of the way as both teams had chances to put up more runs but stellar relief work by La Salle’s Franklin Olivares and St. Edmund kept both teams off the board the rest of the way.

Carlos Flores took the loss for La Salle and Nicholas Brito had two hits for the Cardinals.

Cardinals Baseball Earns a Split at Coastal Virginia Spring Break Baseball Classic

Monday, April 9, 2018 – In an attempt to avoid the bad weather scheduled for the greater Norfolk area, the Cardinals would be scheduled to play their final two games of the Spring Break Classic on Tuesday night in an unconventionally timed double-header.

Fork in the Road
A tight game got out of control late as the La Salle Cardinals lost 10-4 against King’s Fork High School on Day 2 of the Coastal Virginia Spring Break Baseball Classic. After falling behind 0-3 after one inning, La Salle twice got within one run but could not get over the hump.

The Cardinals outhit King’s Fork 6-5 but just couldn’t get the timely hit and paid the price as King’s Fork put up five runs in the bottom of the sixth to put the game away.
Nicholas Brito paced the Cardinals offense with three hits and Franklin Olivares took the loss, giving up 5 runs(3 earned) over five innings.

Better Late

In a game that didn’t start until 10:30pm, the La Salle Cardinals finally picked up their FIRST WIN of the season with a 9-4 win over Euclid (OH) at 1:30am the next morning. The late night start that didn’t stop Cardinals pitcher Julian Nieves, who picked up the win. La Salle was down 3-2 going into the bottom of the fourth when they finally got the big hit as Adrian Santos laced a two-out base clearing triple to the gap in left center to claim a 5-3 lead.

Euclid(OH) fought back loading the bases with no outs in the sixth inning. Cristobal Rivera, pitching in relief of Nieves, struck out three straight to end the threat. Rivera, also helped himself out at the plate in the bottom of the frame with a RBI triple of his own. Euclid put up three runs in the top of the seventh but in the end just ran out steam in the wee hours of the morning.

A tremendous trip throughout, the team was able to play three games against a high level of competition, complete a service project at a local food bank, take a college tour of Norfolk State University and even found some time to get some bowling in. All in all, a wonderful experience for our young men.

Cardinal Baseball Heads to Virginia

Monday, April 2, 2018 – Travelling in a cardinal red coach bus, the La Salle baseball team headed to Virginia this Spring Break to play in the 2018 Coastal Virginia Spring Break Baseball Classic. They spent the next morning training before their first game of the tournament against Norfolk Christian.

In a well-played first game of the 2018 Coastal Virginia Spring Break Baseball Classic, the La Salle Cardinals fell by the score of 4-1 to the host team, Norfolk Christian, at Lakewood Park in Norfolk, Virginia. Junior lefty, Carlos Flores took the loss but was stellar for La Salle, tossing a complete game on only 67 pitches.

The Cardinals got a lead off hit by Gilbert Santos, Jr. on the first pitch of the game but were unable to capitalize as the threat ended before it started. In the bottom of the frame Norfolk Christian capitalized by taking advantage of a fielding error to plate two runs (one earned) for a 2-0 lead.

La Salle had multiple opportunities to put runs on the board but couldn’t cross the plate until Franklin Padilla’s (1 for 3) RBI ground out following Adrian Santos’ (1 for 2) one out triple in the top of the sixth.

Between practice and games, the Cardinals have managed to sprinkle in some team bonding, dining at Crackel Barrell and bowling together along the way. Check out the photos below!

A Tough Loss; An Incredible Season

Playing in the CHSAA B Championship Game at Fordham University for the 2nd year in a row, La Salle looked to repeat as City Champions for the first time in decades. Playing against rival Regis in a low scoring contest, the Cardinals led 34-30, entering the 4th quarter and tried to withstand a late run by the Raiders that included 4 three-pointers but were unable to regain the lead, falling 44-42.

The Cardinals were led by Korey Williams, who with his short jumper in the 2nd quarter surpassed 1000 points for his career, and finished with 18 points on the day while Josiah Chandler added 14 points, 7 assists and 7 rebounds.

While the close loss was tough on the Cardinals, it does not take away from what was an incredible season! This season saw the team net its second consecutive 20-win campaign, finishing 21-3 overall. The Cardinals, who began the season ranked #1 in Class B by the NYS Sportswriters Association, also concluded the regular season with that #1 ranking.

The Cardinals also had 3 individuals honored by CHSAA as Korey Williams was voted League MVP, Josiah Chandler was selected to the “All-League” team and Jerome Pannell was selected as Division B Coach of the Year.

We are all very proud of our team, we celebrate their efforts and accomplishments as we begin to prepare for next season but not before wishing our seniors the best of luck in college and beyond!

Remember… We Are La Salle!

Varsity Basketball Advances to City Championship Game

Sunday, February 25, 2018 – Playing in the City Championship semi-finals yesterday, La Salle’s varsity basketball team (21-2) defeated Moore Catholic 49-48 on a buzzer beater by Korey Williams. Trailing throughout much of the game, the Cardinals would take a brief five-point lead in the third quarter before Moore would storm back to take a one-point lead entering the fourth quarter. Trailing by three points with 55 seconds to go, the Cardinals would use their trademark defense to cause a turnover that led to a Tyler Cambrelen lay-up, eventually setting up the final play with eight seconds remaining when Korey Williams would rebound a Josiah Chandler miss and put it back as time expired. Korey would lead the Cardinals with 19 points while Josiah Chandler added 16 points and Tyler Cambrelen chipped in 8 points.

With the victory, the team’s 21st of the season, the Cardinals will play for the City Championship on Friday at Fordham University vs. rival Regis at 6pm.

JV Basketball Falls in Championship Game to Salesian

Sunday, February 25, 2018 – JV Basketball played in the City Championship at Fordham Prep and fell to Salesian 48-30. The Cardinals were led by Amadou Kouyate with 19 points. Struggling to score, the team was able to stay in striking distance through halftime but a size-able third quarter run became too much for the Cardinals to overcome.

Although the team didn’t win the championship, it was a great season and we would like to congratulate them on making it as far as they did.

Varsity Basketball Advances to City Semi-Finals
