Middle Village, NY, March 3, 2020 – Playing in the CHSAA Semi-finals at Christ the King on Tuesday night, the varsity Cardinals lost a hard fought 55-52 game at the hands of the St. Edmund Prep Eagles. St. Edmund’s jumped out to an early 14-7 lead at the end of the first quarter and extended that lead to as many as 14 points in the 2nd quarter before the Cardinals closed out the half with a 12-0 run to cut the deficit to 26-24 at the half. A tightly played second half would be comprised of timely, clutch shooting on both sides. Trailing by 1 point with under a minute remaining, the Cardinals were unable to get over the hump to gain the lead for the victory.
In their 2nd season back in the CHSAA ‘A’ division, the Cardinals advanced to the semi-finals for the 2nd consecutive season (at least the semi-finals for the 6th straight season overall) and finish this season with a 13-13 overall record. The team was led by Stephone Vergara with 19 points followed by Giovanni Baquero with 16 points while Dany Diaz chipped in 7 points, grabbing multiple key rebounds during the second half run. A fourth straight title was not in the cards as the rematch of last year’s Championship game was a total role reversal, this time, with La Salle on the short end of the stick.
The Cardinals only managed to get three runners into scoring position but could not push one across as they were no-hit by Scanlan’s starting pitcher.

Two errors in the top of the first opened the door for Nazareth as they jumped ahead 3-0 before La Salle could even come to the plate but the Cardinals chipped away plating solo runs in the 1st and 2nd innings to cut the deficit to one going into the bottom of the third. In the fourth, La Salle took advantage of a Nazareth miscue, an infield pop-up that would have been the third out, fell to the dirt, and the Cards cashed in, scoring four on a two-run triple by Franklin Olivares and RBI singles by Jimmy Muniz and Gilbert Santos, Jr. The bottom of La Salle’s order was phenomenal going 9 for 11 with seven runs scored and six RBIs.

Rivera, also helped himself out at the plate in the bottom of the frame with a RBI triple of his own. Euclid put up three runs in the top of the seventh but in the end just ran out steam in the wee hours of the morning.
A tremendous trip throughout, the team was able to play three games against a high level of competition, complete a service project at a local food bank, take a college tour of Norfolk State University and even found some time to get some bowling in. All in all, a wonderful experience for our young men.

Junior lefty, Carlos Flores took the loss but was stellar for La Salle, tossing a complete game on only 67 pitches.
The Cardinals got a lead off hit by Gilbert Santos, Jr. on the first pitch of the game but were unable to capitalize as the threat ended before it started. In the bottom of the frame Norfolk Christian capitalized by taking advantage of a fielding error to plate two runs (one earned) for a 2-0 lead.
La Salle had multiple opportunities to put runs on the board but couldn’t cross the plate until Franklin Padilla’s (1 for 3) RBI ground out following Adrian Santos’ (1 for 2) one out triple in the top of the sixth.

Senior Billy Gonzalez also had a big day going 2 for 4 with a triple and 2 RBIs. Jimmy Muniz also contributed two hits and a run scored. For the second time in as many days, the La Salle offense struck first as speedy Gilbert Santos, Jr. was able to squeeze past Nazareth’s pitcher, who was covering home on a wild pitch. In the second the Cardinals batted around and put up 5 runs, to give them the comfort of the lead which they never gave back.
The Cardinals will face the Nazareth Kingsmen, one more time, for the CHSAA Varsity “A” Division Championship. The game will take place on Friday, June 2nd at St. John’s University in Queens at 4:00pm.
Tuesday, May 30, 2017 – The La Salle Academy Cardinals varsity baseball team are headed to the CHSAA “A” Division Championship round thanks to stout pitching and an opportunistic offense that lead to a 10-0 five inning victory over St. John’s Prep at Salesian High School.

Nieves helped himself at the plate going 2 for 3 with a run scored, two RBIs and four stolen bases. Gilbert Santos Jr. and Nicholas Brito contributed two hits and two RBIs apiece as the Cardinals stole 11 bases as a catalyst for the offense.

La Salle, the #2 seed, will face the top seeded Nazareth Kingsmen, tomorrow, Wednesday, May 31st at Fordham University in the Bronx at 7pm.

Saturday, May 27, 2017 – There is a playoff saying, “survive and move on,” and the La Salle Academy Cardinals did just that on Saturday with a 10-6 victory over the Sacred Heart Irish at Randall’s Island to move into the “Winners” bracket of the CHSAA 2017 Varsity “A” Championship Baseball Tournament. The win set up a Sunday showdown with the Nazareth Kingsman, 2pm at Msgr. McClancy High School, with the winner moving on into the Championship Round.
The score was tied 6-6 as the Cardinals and the Irish flip flopped 2 and 4 runs in the first two innings.
Angel Fernandez-Diaz pitched three scoreless innings in relief of Danny Maria to pick up the win. La Salle scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth to break a 6-6 tie as Gilbert Santos, Jr. and Nicholas Brito both walked and scored. Santos, Jr. would score on the back end of a double steal and Brito on a wild pitch. In the seventh following a walk to Adrian Santos, Billy Gonzalez (2 for 4) put the game out of reach with a mammoth home run to left that landed on the river basin of the park.
Sunday, May 28, 2017 – Twice down eight runs, the La Salle Cardinals rallied for five in the fourth and six in the sixth, but couldn’t push across the tying runs with the bases loaded in the top of the seventh and came up on the wrong end of their 11-13 loss to the Nazareth Kingsmen in the winners bracket game of the CHSAA Varsity “A” Championship Tournament at McClancy High School in Queens.
For the second straight day, the Cardinals fell behind early as Nazareth put up back to back four spots off La Salle’s starter John Michael Silvers, who took the loss after failing to get out of the second inning. La Salle finally showed some life as they put up five runs in the top of the fourth thanks to a 2-RBI single by Adrian Santos. However, the Kingsmen struck right back for five runs to build their lead back to eight.

Wednesday, May 17, 2017 – In a battle for division supremacy, the La Salle Cardinals fell short 7-5 against Monsignor Scanlan in the Bronx. However, La Salle holds the tiebreaker (head-to-head) over Scanlan but Nazareth has the tiebreaker over La Salle.
La Salle broke on the board for four runs in the top of the second only to give up five runs to Scanlan in the bottom of the frame. LSA pitcher, Angel Fernandez-Diaz (L) scored the tying run in the top of the third but the Cardinals failed to capitalize the rest of the inning leaving the bases loaded without pushing across any extra runs to support. Scanlan grabbed the lead for good in the fifth on an errant throw to third on a stolen base, which ended up in left field. They tacked on an insurance run in the sixth for the final margin of victory.
On offense, Jervon Warlick had two hits and Julian Nieves had one-hit and two RBIs to pace the cards.
