La Salle Academy’s October Recap

Louis C., a student government officer from the Class of ’23, recently provided a tour for an alumnus from the Class of ‘97, who had also been elected a class leader during his time at La Salle. As the tour concluded in my office, each of the two men used the word “brotherhood” as a distinctive descriptor of the essence of La Salle Academy. It is clear to me that such a feeling is real and consistent. However, like other key dimensions of our school, it not a tangible characteristic. That makes it difficult to market and a challenge to convey to a potential student and his parent(s).

Fortunately, when Future Cardinals visit our school with their families, the intangible characteristics of brotherhood and family are obvious. One attendee to our recent Open House event said, “The student tour guide treats you with so much respect but at the same time makes you feel like you already know them and the approach to ask a question becomes very pleasant.” One mom, speaking for herself and her son reported, “We were impressed with the teachers’ love and commitment to the students.” Another guest shared, “Everyone was warm and welcoming. The students were helpful, courteous, outgoing, and very professional.” I am happy to report that attendance at this year’s Open House exceeded last year’s number by more than 50%.

Earlier this month, our freshmen participated in Freshmen Field Day, our sophomores and juniors took the PSAT, and our seniors visited Manhattan College. Pictured here at left is the winning homeroom from Field Day and at right is Sam K. ’23 in front of the green screen in Manhattan College’s television studio. Read more about this visit on our website.

After a win over Cathedral Prep on Wednesday, the varsity soccer team now has a record of 7-2-2 as they close out the season. The team competes against Cardinal Hayes this afternoon and then they are playoff bound. Go Cardinals!

La Salle’s Cross Country team will compete in Sectionals this Saturday. Pictured here is one of our young runners, Nathaniel K. ’25. The young XC squad is developing and are sure to prove future success.

Our Guest Lecture Series has begun again and we have already had some visitors. Pictured here is Jordan Pastor ’13 with Ms. O’Mara’s Art Class. Read more about Jordan in our Alumni News feature. Interested in speaking to a class? Contact Ms. Ann Straub at [email protected].

Poor weather conditions prevented us from hosting our golf outing this fall. We are working to reschedule the event and a date will be announced soon. Student government president, Eamon M. ’23, assisted me in selecting a winner for our Annual Cardinal Classic 50/50 Draw. Congratulations to John Gallagher ’54!

As we enter the final months of the calendar, our society invites us to consider our blessings. As you tally your assets at Thanksgiving and purchase gifts from your abundance at Christmas, I invite you to think of La Salle, too. Be on the look out for the way we focus your attention on this request in the weeks ahead.

May God bless you and those special to you!
