La Salle Academy’s September Recap

Imagine climbing to the fifth floor, searching for the biology classroom, sitting on a lab stool, and being surrounded by unfamiliar faces. For the freshmen new to La Salle at the start of September, those experiences signaled that they were in high school. This past Tuesday evening, their parents followed their footsteps at Back to School Night. It was great to welcome the adults to our corridors and classrooms and to hear their positive comments about the initial experience their sons have had at La Salle. Their presence was an affirmation of the value they place on education and an indication of their desire to build their partnership with us. The fact that 40% of our student body had at least one representative of his family present is an encouraging statistic.

In the photos below you can get a glimpse of some of our student who gathered with their classmates for their orientation sessions.

For the first time in over two and half years, our entire school came together to celebrate Mass. The Mass of the Holy Spirit was held on 21 September. Thank you to Father Michael Eugenio for leading us in prayer. It was an extra special occasion, as we welcomed men from the Class of 1982 to join us. On the occasion of their 40th anniversary of graduating from La Salle Academy, they presented their alma mater with a beautiful stained-glass panel depicting Saint La Salle, which they had commissioned.

Pictured with the stained glass from left to right are Dave Harney ’82, former faculty member Bernie ZablockiEric Reyes ’82Louis Charpentier ’23Edgar Alvarado ’23Lazaro Garcia ’82Giovanni Lanzo ’82Chris Heyen ’82Paul Quirke ’82, and former faculty member Robert Monahan ’70. Special thanks to Dave who gathered his classmates and spearheaded the creation of this class gift and the collection of funds that made it possible!

Chris Washington, who serves La Salle as Assistant Athletic Director, Varsity Baseball and Soccer Coach, and COVID-19 Coordinator, was recently selected as a new member of the Board of Trustees for his alma materHoward University. We are proud of Coach Washington for this incredible accomplishment!

The array of flags outside my office, which represents the homelands of the parents of La Salle students since my arrival as President in 2019, has grown by three. Our new students have enhanced the ethnic mix of our student body by bringing aspects of the cultures of Cameroon, Romania, and Sri Lanka to our school. There are now 55 flags on display!
