LARRY RAWSON

Larry Rawson, famed ESPN track and field commentator, is receiving The Legacy Award at La Salle Academy’s 28th Annual Spring Gala for his decades-long dedication and commitment to the high school.

A graduate of Boston College, where he was a 4.07 miler, Mr. Rawson graduated with a major in marketing and a minor in finance. He had a successful finance career working at firms such as Kidder Peabody and Paine Webber, Lehman Brothers, Morgan Stanley, CRT Capital Group, LLC and Greenwich Investment Partners, LLC. He also proudly served our country as a Captain in the United States Marine Corps, where he was an intelligence and artillery officer and served in combat in Vietnam as an artillery forward observer. During his time serving the USMC, he was an All-Marine Track and Field Champion and competed internationally representing the U.S.A.

Mr. Rawson has been reporting track and field meets and marathons since the inception of the network and is ESPN’s 5th longest-serving commentator. He has commentated four World Championships and seven Summer Olympic Games in track and field as well as 51 NCAA cross country, indoor and outdoor track and field championships for ESPN and CBS. Mr. Rawson has also co-hosted the Chicago, New York and Boston marathons nationally and internationally for 101 events.

No stranger to the spotlight, Mr. Rawson is a two-time national and two-time regional Emmy award winner for track and field and sports journalism commentary for ESPN and Madison Square Garden networks. All of Mr. Rawson’s experience and knowledge of track and field has certainly paid off. In 1984, he was inducted into the Boston College Athletic Hall of Fame. In the 2000s, he was the first commentator to receive the Penn Relays Lifetime Achievement Award and he was inducted into the New York Athletic Club Hall of Fame for his contributions to track and field. In 2004 and 2012, Mr. Rawson was honored by La Salle Academy and All Hallows High School, respectively, for his contributions to these inner-city schools.

Besides his generosity toward the rebuilding of La Salle Academy’s track and field program, Mr. Rawson’s other civic track and field involvement includes serving on the Board of Directors for Students Run LA from 1992 to present, presiding the National Scholastic Athletic Foundation as Chairman of the Board from 2002 to present, and sitting on the Board of Advisors for The Armory Foundation from 2010 to present.

A major contributor to La Salle’s Student Sponsorship Program for nearly 20 years, Mr. Rawson has provided scholarship monies for countless young men. He is also responsible for helping resurrect La Salle’s storied track and field program this year, not only through his financial support, but by providing his expertise on how to develop a competitive team. Mr. Rawson was instrumental in recruiting La Salle’s new Track Program Director, who happens to be one of the best coaches in New York City. This is the second time Mr. Rawson has been honored by La Salle Academy for his generous contributions. He attributes his passion for Catholic education to his Christian Brothers’ schooling, as he is a graduate of St. Mary’s High School in Waltham, Massachusetts.
