Dear Students and Parents,
Thank you for your patience and attentiveness during these unusual times. As was stated in the email that went out on March 12th, LSA has taken precautionary measures in response to the current health situation. Your teachers have posted assignments on the portal system for Friday and today (Monday) as they would do normally. Tomorrow, Tuesday, March 17th is St. Patrick’s Day and will be counted as a holiday from school. Wednesday, March 18th, we will begin our virtual school day online. Below you will see a series of instructions and other information. Please read through it fully and carefully. Reach out with any questions.

Spectrum to offer free internet access for students due to coronavirus
Spectrum plans to offer free internet to students without access as the novel coronavirus, or COVID-19, forces some schools to switch to online learning. Beginning March 16, the company commits to offering free internet for 60 days to households with K-12 or college students who don’t already have a Spectrum subscription. The company also plans to partner with school districts to ensure communities are aware of the tools to help students learn remotely.

Attendance:
Teachers will be reporting class “attendance” (participation in online class time) to Ms. Santos as they normally do. If your son has not logged into PlusPortal and participated in class, an email will be sent from Ms. Santos to parents letting them know. Parents, please make sure you are checking your email for messages from LSA daily.
Communicating over the phone:
For any parents or students that have questions that need to be answered immediately over the phone, you can call the school number (212-475-8940) between the hours of 8 am and 3 pm. The calls will be forwarded to Ms. Santiago. Otherwise, email any of us directly.
Classes:
We will follow the schedule of classes from periods A- H as we would normally do. However, this will be done online. There will NOT be a homeroom period. The day will go from 8:18- 2:15 as the periods normally occur. Wednesday will be day 4 of the cycle. Students should log in to the PlusPortals system, click on the class they should be in for period A, and scroll down to the “Discussions” section and click on the discussion for the day. Here your teacher will give you an instruction that requires a reply from you in real time (Detailed instructions on the discussion section will be sent out from Mr. Stark from the Academics email address later today). This will be how attendance is taken for that class period. The teacher will then give you instructions for the work that is to be done during that time period. Follow those instructions exactly, paying particular attention to when the assignment is due. I highly suggest that students set a series of alarms on their device that notifies them of the end of each period. Class times are listed below.

B – 9:03 – 9:45
C- 9:48 – 10:30
D – 10:33 – 11:15
E – 11:18 – 12:00
F – 12:03 – 12:45
G – 12:48 – 1:30

School Day SAT that was scheduled for March 25:
The junior class was scheduled to take the SAT at school on March 25th. This date has been postponed. Juniors will take the SAT at school on April 28th.
Tips for this time period:
These are unusual circumstances. We are asking students to log a lot of screen time during these weeks. Please take breaks during the day. Step away for 2-3 minutes. Stretch and walk around the apartment. Drink plenty of water. Use your lunch periods (or free periods for seniors) to rest your mind and get something to eat. Don’t watch the news all day every day. We all need a break from the Corona coverage so that we can rest our minds and ease the anxiety. Reach out to your guidance counselor via email if you want/need to. They will be available during the day. Reach out to any administrator. We will be available to you for any reason, as well.
Please approach this time period with flexibility and patience. While we attempt to plan for all possible scenarios, we know that that is impossible. Inevitably, there will be hiccups along the way. We will make adjustments and corrections as needed. LSA prides itself on our sense of community. I believe that this is an opportunity for us to shine and come together as that community to succeed even in trying times. Please keep the lines of communication open. I will keep you updated as to our return date to school as time goes on. If we need to extend online classes beyond March 27th, we will do so. Thank you the kind words of support that have already been sent in. They are greatly appreciated. And most of all, let us appreciate our teachers who are the real heroes in this situation, as they have adjusted their lessons to make this all happen, and in a very short period of time.

Día Escolar SAT que estaba programado para el 25 de marzo:
La clase Junior estaba programada para tomar el SAT en la escuela el 25 de marzo. Esta fecha ha sido pospuesta. Los jóvenes tomarán el SAT en la escuela el 28 de abril.
Consejos para este período de tiempo:
Son circunstancias inusuales. Pedimos a los estudiantes que registren mucho tiempo de pantalla durante estas semanas. Por favor, tome descansos durante el día. Aléjate de 2-3 minutos. Estire y camine alrededor del apartamento. Beba mucha agua. Use sus períodos de almuerzo (o períodos gratuitos para personas mayores) para descansar su mente y obtener algo de comer. No veas las noticias todo el día todos los días. Todos necesitamos un descanso de la cobertura de Corona para poder descansar nuestras mentes y aliviar la ansiedad. Comuníquese con su consejero por correo electrónico si lo desea/necesita. Estarán disponibles durante el día. Comuníquese con cualquier administrador. Acérquese a este período de tiempo con flexibilidad y paciencia. Si bien intentamos planificar todos los escenarios posibles, sabemos que eso es imposible. Inevitablemente, habrá hipo en el camino. Haremos ajustes y correcciones según sea necesario. LSA se enorgullece de nuestro sentido de comunidad. Creo que esta es una oportunidad para que brillemos y nos unamos como esa comunidad para tener éxito incluso en tiempos difíciles. Por favor, mantenga las líneas de comunicación abiertas. Te mantendré informado de nuestra fecha de regreso a la escuela a medida que pase el tiempo. Si necesitamos extender las clases en línea más allá del 27 de marzo, lo haremos. Y sobre todo, apreciemos a nuestros maestros que son los verdaderos héroes en esta situación, ya que han ajustado sus lecciones para que todo esto suceda, y en un período muy corto de tiempo.
