2022-2023 Summer Reading Assignments
Each year we distribute a summer reading list for students entering grades 9-12 at La Salle. For 2022, to continue aligning summer reading with expectations of the New York State Learning Standards and La Salle’s Standard of Excellence, La Salle is requiring that students read the 4 books from the attached list.
We call these titles “prerequisite” books; students are expected to read, prior to the start of school in September. These readings will be included in class discussions throughout the year and will be used in the end of the year reports and assessments. The school community at La Salle also would like to continue to engage each other in the conversation of racial injustice and oppression. All students will be required to read Between the World and Me by TaNehisi Coates. Throughout the year, La Salle faculty will create opportunities for student and staff reflection with this reading. We hope to include families in that discussion, and we invite you to engage in the reading as well. Not only do we constantly work to ensure our curriculum aligns with New York State for our students but also include the current world so their diverse voices can always have an opportunity to be heard.
Students must join the Google Classroom for their respective grade level (see link below), read the 2 assigned books for English class, answer questions on the Actively Learn website, and/or complete essays for the books listed. Students must also read the assigned books for Science and Global and be prepared for assessments and discussions upon their return in September and throughout the year.
In addition, a submission on the New York Times website is required every week. Please see the instructions attached.
We also strongly urge students to develop the habits of good readers and to include reading as part of their academic and leisure activities.
Thanks to our parents for supporting the summer reading program.
