La Salle Academy’s April Recap

Last week, I wished Bill “Happy Easter”. He was quick to respond that Easter was over. I refrained from a lesson in theology, and reverting to my experience as a math teacher, I noted that the Easter season is 25% longer than Lent. How wonderful that joy, hope, and new life dominate! Fortunately, teachers at La Salle Academy are fueled by a strong belief and professional commitment to instill joy in learning, hope in the future, and new life as a promise to be fulfilled.
Certainly, the gradual implementation of our students’ aspirations for the future is reflected in the steps they take following graduation. It is an important indicator of our success as a college preparatory high school to acknowledge that as of now almost one hundred colleges and universities are prepared to welcome the men in our Class of 2023. Visit our website (www.LaSalleAcademy.org) for the full list as of May 1.

Chris Gardner, the inspiration for the movie The Pursuit of Happyness, shared his story and insights with our student body. Every student and faculty member received an autographed copy of his book, Permission to Dream. We thank Mr. Sal LaRocca ’82, Chair of the Board of Trustees, who made it possible for Chris to visit La Salle.

Brother Robert Schaefer, FSC, the Provincial/Visitor of the Brothers for the District of Eastern North America, spent a day at La Salle and met with a group of students and several groups of teachers. He is pictured above flanked by Brother Richard Galvin, FSC, our Campus Minister, and me. He had great things to say about our school!

Congratulations to Xavier F. ’24 for meriting recognition as a QuestBridge College Prep Scholar. He is one of only 3,518 high school juniors from over 15,000 applicants nationally who received this designation. This status enhances his chances for a full four-year scholarship with the QuestBridge College Match Program.

Mr. Thomas Ferro joined our staff as the Senior Director of Advancement and Alumni Relations. As an alumnus of Christian Brothers Academy in Lincroft, NJ, and a former member of their Advancement Office staff, he brings a familiarity with, and belief in, our Lasallian mission. Pictured with Mr. Ferro and me are Mr. Justin Talavera and Ms. Zenaida Sonberg, the other members of our Advancement Office staff.

Several of our students participated in the Latin Ballroom Showcase at Cathedral High School. The event encompassed months of technical training, dedication, and discipline. We applaud these young dancers for their enthusiasm!

Thank you to Ms. Pat Toney, English Department Chair, and members of our English Department for organizing our in-house Poetry out Loud competition. It was great to witness the skills of memorization, elocution, and dramatization come together so well.

Will I see you at The Yale Club on Thursday, 11 May for our 31st Scholarship Benefit? Many friends and alumni from the 1950s through the 2010s have already bought tickets and we are approaching a sellout crowd! To purchase your ticket(s), to see other levels of engagement, or to make a donation, click here.

Taking a mulligan from our twice rained out Fall 2022 golf outing! Our June 2023 Cardinal Classic Golf Outing will be teeing off at 11:00am at Whippoorwill Country Club in Armonk, NY. If you are interested in golfing or securing sponsorship opportunities, click here!

Our baseball team is at the midway point of the season with a record standing at 5-1 in the CHSAA Intersectional ‘A’ Division. Go Cardinals!

Volleyball’s inaugural season continues with playoffs on the horizon. Best of luck to Coach Pannell, Coach Bahno and our student athletes as they finish the year on a strong note!

Our outdoor track team had the opportunity to run in the Penn Relays in Philadelphia. Congratulations to sophomore Emmanuel P. who garnered two personal bests in the course of the competition. Thank you to Coach Hackshaw and his staff for guiding our student athletes all season.

The immanent ratification of La Salle’s strategic plan will be another indicator of Easter life. Two steps forward, as identified in the plan, have recently occurred. The addition of Ms. Megan Welling as Director of Enrollment Management and the hiring of Mr. Thomas Ferro as Senior Director of Advancement and Alumni Relations are welcome signs of progress. Each brings experience and enthusiasm to their posts, and we are happy for their presence at La Salle.

I have already had several meetings with Dr. Thomas Fitzmaurice, who will follow me as La Salle’s President beginning 1 July 2023. I am energized by his evident competence and genuine commitment to the Lasallian mission as lived out at our school. Read more about my successor here.

The resurrected Jesus brings vitality and vision. That Jesus, and his message, are alive at La Salle Academy. Happy Easter!

Gratefully,

Brother Thomas P. Casey, FSC
President
