La Salle Academy’s May Recap

It was an honor to welcome Cardinal Timothy Dolan to our school. He celebrated Mass with us as we concluded our week honoring our school’s namesake, Saint John Baptist de La Salle. The Cardinal’s gregarious presence and affirming comments were true gifts. He called forth the faculty to honor them as part of our teachers’ appreciation activities. He blessed the class pins and rings our juniors received. He met our three students who received sacraments of initiation during the Easter Vigil. I was grateful for the opportunity I had for a private conversation with him and to express my thanks for his ongoing support of Catholic education.

I was happy to meet other believers in our mission when I attended our Cardinal Classic Golf Outing at North Hempstead Country Club. The professionalism of the venue staff and the flexibility of the participants allowed us to adjust our schedule so the threat of inclement weather did not deter a great experience. Thanks to all who were involved with this successful fundraiser which grossed over $70,000!

Men from the classes of 1995, 1996 and 1997 celebrated their 25th high school reunion at Juniper Bar in Manhattan. They reminisced about their days at La Salle in the early ’90s and fondly remembered former teachers Brother Rich Galvin (who still serves La Salle today!), Mr. Steven Kerrigan (who joined us that evening as well), and other familiar names from La Salle’s history.

As traditional events like the prom (photo at left above), the senior class trip to Six Flags Great Adventure (photo at right above), in-person AP exams, and a senior breakfast make their return, our soon-to-be newest alumni anticipate their graduation ceremony at St. Patrick’s Cathedral and look forward to the realization of their plans for continued education. This extraordinary class has members who will study at selective colleges such as Stanford, Cornell (where more than one LSA graduate will attend!), Colby and NYU. They are sons of immigrants from the Philippines, Mexico, Guatemala, Nigeria and the Dominican Republic, respectively. Congratulations all around!

Incoming Cardinals made their first move into the life of our school when they and their parents joined us for a Welcome Dinner last Thursday night. A recent poll of the parents of our current students awarded 4.84 out of 5 stars to the statement, “I sense a healthy experience of community at La Salle that includes and nurtures my son.” A recent survey of our graduates recorded the highest score (4.81 out of 5) to “I am proud to be an alumnus of La Salle Academy.” It is encouraging that a new cohort of young men is poised to benefit from their time at La Salle as well.

I applaud and appreciate your interest in La Salle Academy and assure you of my prayers and best wishes.
