La Salle Academy’s September Recap

My grandmother loved to bake. She would crank the sifter and I would watch the flour get jostled, make its way through a sieve, and come out slightly different than it went in. As we began this academic year, there were indications that our teachers and students had an experience similar to the flour.

After a gap of 550 days between the times when all the adults and teenagers were in the school building, we came together on 13 September as one La Salle Academy. I sense a pervasive happiness in the opportunity to be with one another in person, but the ever-present masks speak of uncertainty and caution. Resilience and resolve enabled the La Salle Academy community to get about its business and support the common good. Familiar routines resumed and “pull up your mask” joined “tuck in your shirt” as refrains voiced by teachers and administrators. In person classes, interscholastic athletic contests, announcements on the PA, and casual chatter in the corridors contribute to the shared conviction that it is good to be back!

Fall sports are underway! To date, our Varsity Soccer team is 4-1 and they will play Sacred Heart today (Friday, October 1st) at 4:30pm in East River Park. If you are around the area and available to attend, go cheer them on! Veton D. ’22 is the leading scorer with 12 goals and goalkeeper Aaron G. ’22 has two shut-outs.

Open House will be held live in person at our school on 6th Street on Saturday, October 16th from 10 am to 2 pm. This event will help us recruit prospective Cardinals for the 2022-2023 school year and beyond. If you know a 7th or 8th grader looking for a high school soon, send him our way! Contact Mr. Anthony Chin at 212-475-8940 ext. 240 or by email.

Our Virtual 5K Run/Walk is back! Register here and complete your 5K (3.1 miles) any time from October 16th through 24th wherever is most convenient for you. The first 100 recipients will receive a snazzy La Salle Academy finisher medal. A special thank you to our Gold and Silver Medal sponsors, Under Armour and Network Outsource!

Mark your calendars! Our Cardinal Classic Golf Outing will be held on Monday, May 16, 2022 at North Hempstead Country Club. Our 30th Annual Scholarship Benefit will be held on Thursday, June 9, 2022 at Tribeca Rooftop. More information to come!

Calling all alumni: We want YOU to be featured on our website’s Alumni News section. Send an email to Ms. Daria Coney with some information about what you did after La Salle and what you are up to now. We love learning about where our alumni go after they graduate!

Working with Brother Richard, our Campus Minister, student leaders coordinated La Salle’s participation in the launch of International Lasallian Days for Peace, which showcases our worldwide Lasallian network. More information about this initiative can be viewed here.

It has been more than a year and a half since we last prayed together as a school community. While we are a school that is welcoming of all religions, we educate our students about the meaning and ritual associated with the celebration of Mass. Before our first Mass of the school year, which will be held on November 1st to celebrate the Feast of All Saints, Brother Richard has arranged for each religion class to come to our chapel for a small group Mass during the month of October. Then, on November 1st, we will all pray together as one. Know that you will be remembered in our prayers. Thank you for yours.
