LA SALLE ACADEMY’S October RECAP

The Catholic High School Athletic Association (CHSAA) determined that with proper protocols in place, a curtailed fall season could occur. Our soccer players, bowlers, and cross-country runners suited up and headed for the pitch, the alleys, and the woods. Our talented and attentive coaches have done a fine job affording our students an opportunity to play…an activity that has been foreign to them for months! See the short piece about our athletes below.

We have other activities happening too, however, they are all occurring remotely. For example, our drama club members are practicing elocution, our debaters are engaged in political discussions, and the first issue of our school newspaper is taking shape. Creative teachers and enthusiastic students make for a vibrant school…La Salle Academy!

To kick off October, the CHSAA Cross-Country Opener at Van Cortlandt Park was named in honor of our very own coach, William Hackshaw, who has served at several New York Archdiocesan high schools over the course of his career. Congratulations, Coach! (Oh, and our students won the meet!)

After assessing a number of factors and surveying faculty and parents, we decided to continue with full remote education for the second quarter of the academic year, which begins November 9th. Click here to read the complete message from our Principal, Ms. Kerry Conroy.

Congratulations to Stanley E. ’22 and Cruz B. ’23 who were accepted to The Cooper Union’s Saturday Program! La Salle’s partnership with next door neighbor Cooper Union is a special bond. I am proud and pleased we have two students who are helping to strengthen that tie. This program offers eight free studio art courses and provides students the opportunity to explore media, technique, and concept.

We host our weekly Zoom series, LSA4U, every Wednesday at 7:00 pm for prospective parents and students. This month we heard from the Religion, History, and Science department chairs, along with parents of current sophomores. These 10-minute long presentations are archived on the Admissions section of our website. The series will continue into December.

A Virtual 5K Run/Walk comes to La Salle in November! Click here to register as a participant or to sign on as a sponsor of the event. Complete the 5K by running or walking any time between Tuesday, November 3rd and Wednesday, November 11th. Post your times online through the link provided at registration to see where you rank and receive a La Salle Academy gaiter in the mail after the race. ALL are invited to participate in this event, no matter your age or geographic location! Money raised will help close the gap between the tuition we charge and the actual cost to educate a young man at La Salle.

Our Lasallian Patrons campaign concluded last month but the importance of raising money for tuition assistance continues, because the need remains significant. Our final testimonial came from Matthew Delgiudice ’19, a student who benefited from the generosity of his Patrons, Dr. & Dr. Ellen and Howard McGee ’58, throughout his four years at La Salle. Matthew is also one of our youngest donors! Read his story here and text LSAPATRON to 41444 to learn more about how you can participate in this beneficial program that transforms lives. Consider a monthly contribution that we can count on!

In our Catholic tradition, November is the month when we remember the deceased in a special way. It is also the month when our country invites us to pause and give thanks. As a way to connect these two threads, we have placed a Book of Remembrance in our chapel. If a donation has been made to La Salle Academy in memory of someone, that individual’s name is recorded in the book and those so honored will have a special place in the prayers of those who gather in our chapel.

I am grateful for your belief in our mission and your affirmation of our efforts. God bless you!
