Summer Reading Lists (updated)

LASALLE Reads

LaSalle Reads is an exciting new program at LaSalle Academy that highlights commitment that LaSalle has to the importance of reading as part of a rigorous, college-bound, high school education.

Every summer, each class of incoming freshmen, rising sophomores, juniors and seniors are required to read a set of 3 or 4 books per student, as outlined by the English Department at LaSalle.  These separate, grade-specific reading lists are required reading, and must be completed for discussion by the first week of school, as are the single page summaries required, one per book read.  The mandatory reading lists and the extra reading lists are attached.

In addition the LASALLE Reads program will be engaging every student at La Salle to read more.  For every student that comes back from Summer Vacation having read TEN (10) books or more, they will be names ad LASALLE READERS.  The books chosen must be from the approved attached lists.  Each book must be accompanied by a summary sheet (one per book) that must be typed and completed in the format attached to this memo.  All LA SALLE READERS that have successfully reached this ten book threshold AND have handed in their approved book summaries by Friday September 9th will be invited to a Presidential Luncheon at the end of September that will be co-hosted by the La Salle English Department.  In addition, all LA SALLE READERS will be awarded the gift of NO BOOK FEE for the academic year following that summer of reading.  The book fees which are due in November each year are different for each student based on their specific book needs. The books fees usually are between $100 and $250 per academic year.

Finally, the student that successfully reads the MOST books per grade (four awards total) will receive an additional stipend of $250 that will be taken off their tuition for the academic year.  If there is a tie, the English Department Chair, Ms. Patricia Toney, who will be guiding this program, will determine the grade-level winners based on the quality of the summaries.

Any questions, do not hesitate to contact Ms. Pat Toney, Chair of the English Department at La Salle Academy. She can be reached during the summer at [email protected].

Congratulations LSA Class of 2016!

On the evening of Thursday, June 2, 2016, La Salle graduated the Class of 2016, the 168th class in the school’s history. This was a special day for the nearly 100 students who walked down the aisle of Saint Patrick’s Cathedral to receive their high school diplomas, marking the end of their La Salle career and the beginning of new and bright futures. Many students received special awards for their achievements at La Salle. The student body president spoke about the great lessons that he has learned and the memories he has made as a brother’s boy. The valedictorian added some humor to his speech and inspired everyone to strive to always be the best version of themselves as they go forward from high school. Each student was called by name to receive their diploma. It was a joyous day for everyone. Everyone at La Salle Academy would like to wish every graduate the best of luck in their next endeavors. Remember…You are La Salle.

La Salle Eliminated from Playoffs

Tuesday, May 31, 2016, Brooklyn, NY – In the end, only one team ends the season happy and this year it just wasn’t in the Cards as La Salle lost 2-5 to Nazareth and was eliminated from the 2016 CHSAA A Division Varsity Playoffs, yesterday at American Legion.  The Kingsman move on to the Championship round against Scanlan.  La Salle fell behind 0-2, after one inning, which took some of the opening game fight out of the Cardinals but each time they rallied to put up single runs in the second and third innings, Nazareth answered with runs of their own to maintain their lead.  After that it was quite routine as both teams traded zeroes for the last four innings.  It’s not that the Cardinals played bad in an elimination game as much as they did not play to moment and lost to a senior team that had been there before.  Senior, Chris Pimental, pitching his last game in a LSA uniform took the lost but was solid over six innings giving up seven hits, five runs (four earned) with 10 strikeouts against two walks.  Unfortunately, Nazareth’s Alvarez was a tad better on this day as he struck out 12 Cardinals against two walks en route to the win.  Angel, Billy, Jayson and Gil got the hits for La Salle with Jayson delivering the hardest blow, a line drive double to right in the second but that was about as good as it got as they Cards went down in order over the final four frames.  It was a good season that came up short, La Salle finished the season 11-6 with the playoff losses, which will hopefully feed the Varsity birds for the 2017 season. To the seniors playing in their final game, thank you for being an exemplary student-athlete. We are La Salle.
