La Salle in the City goes backstage at the Met

La Salle Academy’s latest La Salle in the City excursion was a showstopper for students! Earlier this month, 11 boys participated in a unique 90-minute backstage tour of the Metropolitan Opera House at Lincoln Center.

Conducted by Met Opera Guild members, the tour exposed La Salle’s students to production areas usually not seen or imagined by the general public. Sets were being built and costumes were being created. The students also saw how sets were being placed and removed by huge machinery operating on a multi-tiered stage by hundreds of union employees. The students could hear the singers rehearse as well as see blocking in raked rehearsal rooms for upcoming productions.

The history of the old and new Met was discussed by a very knowledgeable tour guide but not before everyone took a seat in the nearly empty auditorium to experience the vast size of the 3,800 seat hall and the jaw-dropping 103 by 90 foot stage.

LSA celebrates Black History Month Mass at St. Pat’s

La Salle Academy was the only Catholic high school to participate in the Black History Month Mass at St. Patrick’s Cathedral on Sunday, February 1st. More than 20 La Salle students and their families attended the Mass that was celebrated by Timothy Cardinal Dolan.

The La Salle family occupied the first six pews of the Church. Senior Noah Griffith ’15 gave the first reading while La Salle’s student government leadership, including Noah, Aidan Gomes ’15, and Adrian Corbin ’15, led the procession. His Eminence acknowledged La Salle’s presence and peeled off the procession to speak with the boys privately. After the Mass, he told Noah that he loved seeing the “sea of Cardinal red sweaters” and requested one for himself.

La Salle Launches the Buckley-Aberer Scholarship

La Salle Academy launched the Buckley-Aberer Scholarship at Alumni Basketball Night on Friday, January 16, to a huge crowd. More than 80 alumni attended to cheer on the Cardinals in a triple-header against Xavier High School and celebrate the storied history of La Salle’s basketball program.

The Buckley-Aberer Scholarship was established in memory and honor of two legendary coaches at La Salle—Dan Buckley ’43 and William C. Aberer ’67. Coach Buckley led the Cardinals to four City Titles in basketball, as well as one City Title in baseball. Coach Aberer amassed more than 500 wins during his 35-year-stint coaching both J.V. and Varsity basketball. More importantly, they will be remembered for their personal commitment to each of their players. Coach was a “Life Coach” to many.

The Buckley-Aberer Scholarship will be awarded to financially disadvantaged students with superior academic achievement and a proven record of leadership. Our goal is to raise $100,000 for the Buckley-Aberer Scholarship in its first year of inception.

La Salle President, Dr. Catherine Guerriero, announced the Buckley-Aberer Scholarship at half-time during the Varsity game at half-court. Coach Bill Aberer and Coach Dan Buckley’s daughters attended the event to kick off the scholarship’s fundraising efforts.

Fallen Heroes Fund Raises Money for the Families of Murdered NYPD Officers

We, the La Salle family, will be raising money for the Fallen Heroes Fund to support the families of the two murdered NYPD officers, Officer Wenjian Liu and Officer Rafael Ramos.

La Salle Academy stands in solidarity with our brave men and women who put their lives on the line every day to keep our families and loved ones safe in this great city. It is just that simple.

The students will be presenting the donations to the NYPD leadership and representatives of the two families in the beginning of February, so every cent matters. The amount that we raise is less important that the fact that we – the boys and the entire La Salle family – send our love and prayers and pennies to these families in memories of their fallen heroes. They are our fallen heroes as well.

The students have already begun their donations, but if any one of us want to make a donation, they can donate here online. Please know that EVERY penny donated will go to a separate fund expressly for these families.

Two-sport athlete on a roll at LaSalle Academy

BY ROBERT ELKIN, The Villager | The East Village’s LaSalle Academy is noted for its baseball and basketball programs that eventually sent a number of its students to the pros.

However, LaSalle, at 215 E. Sixth St., has other teams, such as track and field, that are more low-profile, though it doesn’t even have a football program because of the school’s location. And did anyone even know LaSalle had a bowling team? Well, they do.

Now LaSalle is trying to upgrade the bowling team, though its members unfortunately have to travel a distance to the Whitestone Lanes in Queens for their league matches and to the 34th Avenue Bowl, also in Queens, for practice.

The Cardinals keglers reached the playoffs of the Brooklyn-Queens division of the Catholic High Schools Athletic Association but lost to Archbishop Molloy of Queens, 742-691, 807-651 and 829-578. Molloy thus moves onto the semifinal round of the citywide finals in early January.

Jonathan Glover rolled games of 201, 192 and 204 for a three-game series of 597. His high game for the season was 263. He felt good in bowling that high during the past regular season.

Many student-athletes concentrate on one sport. But some may do any number, depending on the season. Glover, for one, happens to be a two-sport athlete whose other passion is basketball.

Over the past years, Glover bowled recreationally at the 34th Avenue Bowl. He was so outstanding that he received a bowling scholarship to attend LaSalle.

Now that the bowling season is over on an interscholastic level, he’s switching from spinning balls down the lane to shooting them into the hoop.

He didn’t play in any bowling matches during one week before the break because he competed on the school’s hoops squad.

“It’s hard to play two sports at one time,” said Cheryl Glover, Jonathan’s mother, who doubles as an assistant coach for the bowling team, as well.

“He loves basketball, and bowling is something that I love,” she said. “He’s good at both sports. It doesn’t really have an effect on his schoolwork. He gets so wrapped up in the sports that he could forget about the academics. He tries to balance it out.”

It’s hard to pick one, but the 5-foot-10-inch junior said, if he had to, he’d go with the nonbouncing balls.

“If I had a choice to make between the two sports, I would do bowling,” he said. “I feel that bowling would take me on a better path than basketball will. And I am more talented in bowling than in basketball, for I picked up bowling faster than I did basketball.”

His coach, Ron Anderson, said playing more than one sport helps keep Glover on point.

“I love the idea for him to play two sports,” Anderson said. “It keeps his mental attitude straight, thinking what he has to do, and helps with his school work.”

Bowling season started in September with tryouts and practices. They learn the fundamentals of the sport, how to read the lanes’ condition, and learn proper technique for how to hold a bowling ball. Some of these boys even go to a bowling camp, and some of them are in their first or second year of competitive bowling.

“Last year they were in the CHSAA ‘B’ Division Championship,” Anderson said. “They are learning as time goes on. Next year we expect to have a great season. We expect to have everybody returning except one.”

During the offseason, Glover will compete in area basketball tournaments and try to hone his better basketball game. He’ll also be attending a bowling camp in Rochester, N.Y. In the summer, he’ll work on his bowling, too, as will some of the other players, working out on their own to improve their weak points.

Glover is in his fourth year of bowling, including three with his teammates at LaSalle Academy.

Coach Anderson attended Alexander Hamilton High School, where he was on the “B” Division Public Schools Athletic League championship basketball team in his senior year. He then went on to St. Francis College in Brooklyn and played under Coach Dan Lynch. He is more noted for being a basketball coach in “outside leagues” and has more recently turned his attention to bowling.

Storied LaSalle program looking for next stars

BY ROBERT ELKIN  |  Let’s turn the clock back in high school basketball history and ask ourselves who are some of the greatest players ever to come out of the Catholic High School Athletic Association of New York City.

There are too many great ones to single out anyone. However, one hoop buff can’t leave out two players who eventually starred in the National Basketball Association where they made names for themselves. And they both played in different eras.

They are guard Dick McGuire and forward Ron Artest, now known as Metta World Peace. The latter played for six teams in the NBA, including the New York Knicks. And they both came out of LaSalle Academy.

But one can’t forget Jarrel Joye, the school’s all-time leading scorer, and Shammgod Wells, and still another ex-LaSalle sensation, John Candelaria, who was more known for his baseball ability than for basketball. Probably, Candaleria is the greatest multiple-sports athlete produced at LaSalle, for he excelled in basketball, too.

Is there another great player on the way? Right now there aren’t any marquee players on the roster of the boy’s varsity basketball team at LaSalle. They are all about evenly matched. But one never knows if a star is in the making.

“We hope that another All-American or even just a great player is on the way,” said Jerome Pannell, in his first year as head varsity coach at LaSalle, speaking before a recent afternoon practice session. “We are really young and we have a deep freshman class.

“We hope again that we can produce high-level student-athletes, and multiple-sports athletes, and guys who can go to the next level and have great success, as well.”

Pannell’s current starting roster includes seniors Brian Bass and Stephon Riley, Junior Traigan James and Sophomores J’ne Williams and Bryce Council.

Last winter, Bass scored at a 20-point-a-game clip and Riley went for about nine rebounds a game last winter. Including Bass, who is an All-City candidate, the Cardinals return four players from last year’s team.

“Guard play is a major strength on this year’s team,” said Pannell, a graduate of Cathedral Prep High School and City College of New York.

Regarding their offense, he said, “We have a number of shooters. Shooting and team quickness are our other strengths. And our taller players have good speed and are versatile.

“Defensively, we should be tough,” he added. “We’ll most likely play man-to-man defense. Our weakness is that we turn the ball over too much. Our youth can be a weakness. We are inexperienced on the varsity level. As a team we are coming together.”

Despite having an extensive background coaching basketball at different levels and organizations and working at summer camps, Pannell is in his first year of coaching a high school varsity basketball team.

“Coaching is still very new,” said Pannell, 36. “It’s different because you are running an entire program, as opposed to organizing one team. It’s trying to establish a new foundation…and not just rebuilding. It’s trying to make something sustainable in terms of rebuilding.”

Pannell named Bass and swingman Adrian Corbin as co-captains.

“Hearing that players like Ron Artest came out of LaSalle induced me to come here,” said Bass.

“I think that we’ll go far this year,” Corbin added.

“We have a good group of kids who want to learn,” Pannell summed up. “I’m excited.”

Head Start Holiday Party

LSA Varsity @ Brooklyn United Head Start Christmas Party (7)LSA Varsity @ Brooklyn United Head Start Christmas Party (8)LSA Varsity @ Brooklyn United Head Start Christmas Party (5)

In the fall of 2009, one of the SSP mentors of a sophomore student proposed a service opportunity for her student and some of his classmates. The student’s mother worked in a Head Start program in Brooklyn. The mentor proposed that she and the students throw a holiday party for the children of the program. The mentor gathered donated gifts from her colleagues, wrapped them, planned food and arts and crafts for the children, and asked our boys to come and help run the party.  It was a great success and the students (of all ages) had a wonderful time. La Salle students pair up with the children and help serve them food, play with them, and help them with the arts and crafts. Sometimes, some dancing takes place as well. We have turned this into a basketball team event. The mentor’s student graduated in 2012. However, she did not want this to end, and asked that La Salle continue to partner with her. We have gone each December since 2009. It provides a bonding experience for the team as well as an opportunity to give back to the community. As is the motto in many Lasallian schools, our students should “Enter to Learn, and Leave to Serve”.  This is one more opportunity for this to happen. We are grateful to this mentor for her commitment to service and to La Salle Academy.

College Financial Aid Night – Jan 13th @ 6:30pm

On Tuesday, January 13th, at 6:30 PM, we will be hosting our College Financial Aid Night.  Mr. James Murphy, an alum of LSA and an expert in the area of college financial aid, will be here to explain the process and answer all questions. Any student that is looking to receive any form of financial aid for college must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). This can be complicated and confusing for many families. Although the FAFSA cannot be submitted before January 1, 2015 for those looking for aid for the fall of 2015, (most colleges have a FAFSA submission deadline in February or March, but the sooner this is submitted, the better)  we recommend that parents begin working on the process now. Go to the FAFSA website (www.fafsa.ed.gov), create an account, and begin looking at what information you will need to provide. This will allow you to create a list of questions to bring with you to Financial Aid Night on January 13th. We hope that you will make it a point to be there

Varsity Basketball: Br. Arnold Tournament

Exciting Alumni Day at Alma Mater

La Salle Academy held its First Annual Alumni Day on Saturday, November 15th, at its original home on Second Street.

The day was an arousing success as more than 200 members of our alumni, faculty, family, friends and students attended the event to reminisce about La Salle’s glorious past and reconnect with alma mater.

Attendees enjoyed a day of food from the Lower East Side, music that spanned the decades, and classroom tours. Many alumni brought their families along to give them a glimpse of their high school years.

La Salle plans to bring this celebratory event back every November to give alumni the chance to reunite and reminisce. We hope to see you next year!

Soccer team ends season with tough loss to St. Raymond’s

The La Salle Varsity Soccer Team’s season can be described as a season of highs and lows. With a young team, growing pains were to be expected. The 20-member team included seven sophomores and seven freshmen.

IMG_0008

In the beginning of the season we experienced a number of tough losses that seemed like they could have gone either way. As the season progressed and they became more accustomed to one another, the boys really came together and started improving their game.

The highlight of our season was a stretch in the latter half of the year when we won three out of four games, including a 1-0 defeat at always-tough Kennedy Catholic and an 8-0 defeat against St. Edmund’s.

We went into the playoffs feeling very good about ourselves coming off of these victories. But we were ultimately eliminated after a hard fought game against St. Raymond’s, losing 2-1 in double overtime.

The boys were dejected but it should in no way take away from the growth and development that we saw on the field this season. Our young players gained extremely valuable knowledge and playing time that will be vital in the coming years.

Paulo De Souza, senior goalkeeper, was outstanding all year long and has earned himself All-League and potentially All-City honors. Sophomore Jason Criollo, a forward, earned himself All-League honors as well while leading the team with 7 goals on the season. Ultimately, the season did not end the way we wanted it to but the future is extremely bright for the soccer team here at La Salle Academy.—Brian Pally.

On October 9, La Salle Academy held its 20th Annual Cardinal Classic Golf Outing at the beautiful North Hills Country Club in Manhasset, NY.

As golfing legend Arnold Palmer famously said, “The most rewarding things in life are often the ones that look like they cannot be done.”

Well, thanks to the Christian Brothers, their lay and religious collaborators, and our supporters, we have been leading the way in Catholic education in New York City for over 167 years!

Some say Catholic schools are becoming like the dinosaurs; collectively, we say it is thriving in our classrooms and athletic fields, in our ministry and clubs!

Since its inception in 1994, the Cardinal Classic has raised nearly $1 million to help academically gifted, but financially disadvantaged young men receive a Lasallian education. It is through the mission and ministry of this great school that is enriched and advanced by each graduate, supporter and friend who has been touched by the spirit of Saint John Baptist De La Salle. Membership in this always-growing community of dedicated people requires an open and generous heart.

At the Cardinal Classic each year, we remember our brother and alumnus, Ray Downey ’55 whose life and death exemplified this generosity and faith. Like so many of his brother La Salle graduates, Ray’s commitment to service made a difference in this world. The La Salle community honors and remembers him as we presented the Annual Deputy Chief Raymond Downey Memorial Award to the foursome with the best score. This year, our winners were Tony Celano, Rod DeLuca, Howard Poretsky, and Martin Rodini, all friends of La Salle.

We hope that you will join us next year at our 21st Annual Cardinal Classic Golf Outing!

College Financial Aid Night

Ms. Conroy and Ms. Fields invite you to please mark your calendars for this very important date. College Financial Aid Night will take place on Wednesday, January 15, 2014, at 6:30 PM. Although the FAFSA cannot be submitted before January 1, 2014 (most colleges have a FAFSA submission deadline in February or March, but the sooner this is submitted, the better)   I recommend that parents begin working on the process now. Go to the FAFSA website (www.fafsa.ed.gov), create an account, and begin looking at what information you will need to provide. This will allow you to create a list of questions to bring with you to Financial Aid Night on January 15th. Although we will do our best to help you through the FAFSA, this is not an area that Ms. Fields and I specialize in, so it is important to take advantage of this opportunity to hear and speak with Mr. Murphy. I hope that you will make it a point to be there. Happy Holidays!
